Best Mattress for Heavy People

Last Updated: January 2020

When looking for a new mattress, one of the aspects that few people pay enough attention to is the carrying weight of the product. A good mattress for lighter people is quite similar to one for overweight or heavy set people. With that said, both design and function are somewhat different when needing to create a pleasant, rejuvenating sleeping experience for larger than average-sized sleepers.

Some critical factors go into the selection of the best mattress for heavy people. Some of these considerations include thickness, firmness, back support, and edge support. These factors are covered entirely in our Things to consider section.

In general, the mattresses reviewed in this guide are intended for people who weigh 200 pounds and over. While sex, body type, and height play a factor in the appropriate weight range for a healthy size versus an overweight size, we use a general yardstick of 200 pounds as a dividing line for mattresses that support people who weigh more.

What you need to know

There are many 12-inch, and thicker mattresses that provide good support for larger people. A range of types of materials gets used with new beds now, including polyfoam, gel memory foam, latex foam (Talalay and Dunlop models), and various coil spring support structures too.The heavier the sleepers, the firmer the support needs to be.

Various top layers exist to provide plush comfort at the upper part with increasing support for the spine at the lower tiers of the mattress’ structure.

For strong edge support, look for coil-based types.

Thickness levels of 10-inches and lower often lack support for heavier people.Using a mattress with a firmness level below 5 (out of 10) is likely to sag due to its inability to support the sleepers’ weight level.

Innerspring type beds offer the best support, but sometimes the least comfort. A more comfortable top layer of foam or the use of a mattress topper is sometimes necessary to add extra comfort.

Edge support is lacking for heavier people when using low-quality foam products.

Best Mattress for Heavy People: Features & Benefits

Quality beds suitable for heavier people incorporate improved support for single sleepers who may weigh over 250-pounds.

Better heat management materials and designs are used to prevent heat retention. Larger people tend to become hotter than slim people overnight, so more attention is paid to good air flow through improved ventilation to avoid a heat blockage and buildup.

Even wear of mattresses avoids an early problem with parts of the mattress sagging. The inability of many newer beds models to either be flipped over or swapped end-to-end requires the products to stand up to ongoing use without failing early due to sagging or depressions.

#1 Most Recommend  – Nectar Mattress Review – 365-day trialNectar Mattress Reviews

Overall, we think that the Nectar mattress is the best option for heavy people, with it’s dense foam and pocket gel layer it provides excellent support and comfort. Motion transfer is exceptional, as is pressure relief and support. The foam layers are not as responsive as some similar mattresses, as the Nectar mattress has more of a traditional feel to it.

The Nectar mattress isn’t the most firm mattress that we’ve tested, however with its quilted gel pockets and foam that is significantly more dense than many of its competitors, it will be significantly more durable in the long term. It’s also worth remeberring that the Nectar mattress comes with a 365 day trial.

Sleep Innovations Shiloh 12-inch Memory Foam Mattress Review

The Sleep Innovations Shiloh 12-inch Memory Foam Mattress uses its 2.5-inch SureTemp memory foam to keep the Sleep Innovations Shiloh 12-inch Memory Foam Mattress reviewtemperature down with this product. The firmness level is set to medium which is good for heavier sleepers. The Shiloh model comes in several sizes: Twin, Full, Queen, King, and California King.

Check Price

The 9.5-inch Support-Plus layer of foam is sizable enough to provide strong support for big sleepers while keeping motion transfer to a minimum. The deeper base layer which uses high-density foam provides ample support for the head, spine and the joints during a peaceful night of sleep. Whether a side, back or stomach sleeper, the support is sufficient to avoid aches and pains come the morning while the SureTemp memory foam creates a comfortable top sleeping layer to rest on.

Depending on the weight of the sleeper, the 2.5-inch SureTemp memory foam top layer could see the person sinking most of the way through it. For a person in the 300+ pound range, it’s possible they could sink down to the Support-Plus layer below it too. For these people, the greater firmness of the second layer would be noticeable.

The SureTemp material has been formulated to stay heat neutral, rather than rated as cool. However, it’s only 2.5-inches thick, so heat has a chance to escape before it reaches the denser firm base below it.

The firmness level is set right in the middle for a Goldilocks happy medium level of support.

This bed is a 12-inch gel memory foam one that comes in three separate layers:

The first layer is a 1.5-inch gel memory foam layer (4 lbs) that provides comfort with the sinking-in feeling which happens within a few seconds of lying down on it. The thinnest of the layers along with the use of gel cells avoids heat buildup.

The second layer is a 2.5-inch memory foam layer (4 lbs) which offers a bit more firmness while still molding to the contours of the body.

The base layer is an 8-inch premium base foam which is high density to provide the overall support needed for the two plusher layers above it. No one sinks into a mattress more than 4-inches, but even if they did, the firmness of this base layer will stop any further sinkage. While softness is pleasant at the top, everyone’s spine requires proper support when lying down for 8 hours at a stretch. The base layer certainly achieves the right level of support here.

What is a Mattress for Heavy People?

Mattresses come in all shapes and sizes. Not every type is suitable for heavier people though. The reason for this is the need for greater levels of support, increased firmness, better management of heat retention, and improved edge support.

What makes a Mattress for Heavy People different?

A mattress suitable for a heavier person needs to be 12-inches or thicker in most instances (some 10-inch mattresses may be suitable if they have been specifically made to support larger carrying weight limits).

A plush mattress that one sinks into isn’t a good choice for an overweight or large size sleeper because the heavier the person, the deeper they’ll sink into the bed. Too much sinking lacks back support and also makes it difficult to get out of bed in the morning. For these reasons, a firmer mattress (5-8 firmness level) is required. It is possible to use a softer top like a latex or gel memory foam top layer, or a pillow or Euro top, but the lower layers need to be higher density or use a spring coil system to provide sufficient support.

Things to consider

The criteria for a mattress suitable for larger people is a little bit different to ones intended for a broader mix of people.

Below is a breakdown of things to consider:

Mattress Thickness

The thickness of the mattress is one fact that is critically important to get right with heavier sleepers. With lighter sleepers under 200 pounds, a 10-inch mattress is often enough but with larger sleepers, more is needed.

Larger sleepers usually require 12-inch or greater levels of mattress thickness to support the wider and heavier support required. The main aspect that’s important is compression support because without a sufficient depth, the sleeper will not get the kind of back and lumbar support that’s needed. The pressure is greater with heavier sleepers which causes the sink through effect with an insufficient mattress that lacks the necessary robust profile.

Mattresses are not only made of a single layer. Typically, there is a base layer, a support layer, and one or more thinner layers at the top that provide more comfort, with the bottom layers providing support.

There are some manufacturers that have focused in recent times on producing foam-based mattresses that offer greater support despite being only 10-inches thick. A multi-layered approach to product creation often aims to provide a softer top layer (sometimes made of Dunlop or Talalay latex), a second layer (usually made of memory foam), and one or more bottom layers with far greater density to overcome the usual limitations with thinner mattresses. With that said, unless it’s known that a given product supports heavier people, it’s generally best to look for a 12-inch plus mattress thickness for deep compression support with that product.

Firmness

The appropriate firmness for any mattress should be selected by the type of person who will use the product. With a firmness rating between 1 and 10, a medium to medium firm type between 4-7 on the firmness scale is going to be suitable for overweight or large sleepers.

With mattress selection, the firmness level corresponds most readily to the weight of each person who’ll use it. The heavier you or they are, the greater the sinkage into the layers and in the case of memory foam, the more it will envelope or hug you in that position.

It is fair to say as a general rule that the heavier one is, the more sinkage happens. The higher the firmness level, the less sinkage, however, a balance needs to be struck so that heavier people don’t feel like they’re supported while sleeping on a plank of wood! For sleepers over 250 pounds, the firmness level should be 7 to 10 rather than lower, to avoid too much sinkage. The typical sinkage is 1 to 2-inches, depending on the body shape and weight, but this increases to 2-4 inches with people who weight over 250 pounds without an adjustment to the mattress firmness level selected.

Edge Support

Edge support is definitely an issue for heavier sleepers who find that the edge of the mattress, whether it is the left or right side, or the top or bottom ends, lacks the same firmness as the center of the mattress.

In terms of edge support, inner spring mattresses tend to have far more uniform support, often with a wire frame that spans the parameter of the bed, to provide consistent performance. With foam-based products like eco foam, memory foam, latex foam, poly foam, and others, the edge support is less and should be properly considered.

Anyone with small children who like nothing better than to sneak into their parent’s bedroom in the wee hours, to hide from the imaginary monsters in their bedroom, certainly test the edges of the bed as everyone has to make space.

In other situations, two overweight people may push the limits of the width of their bed if they select one that’s too small – like a full size instead of a king size – which pushes at least one of the partners to the edge of the mattress testing its rigidity compared to the center of it.

Often people will sit on the edge or at the end of the bed while pulling on their socks, their underwear, and then the rest of their daily attire. Foam layers are less able to handle edge use, and along with standing on the bed, these actions put the level of support under the most stress.

Needless to say, passionate lovers also don’t want to suddenly feel a drop in level when reaching the edge of the bed either. Enough said.

A mattress that performs better along the edges is less likely to sag from use over time. The wear over its usage period won’t center around the edges either which extends the life of the product.

Should you be particularly concerned about edge support – perhaps your last mattress didn’t offer enough – look for coil-in-coil, inner spring, or the types of hybrid design that use both innerspring and foam. Foam mattresses that are 12-inches and thicker offer reasonable edge support and are still worth a look.

Getting Too Hot While Sleeping

One of the common issues with mattresses is that the person or people sleeping get hot overnight which interferes with sleeping because it causes tossing and turning. The heat buildup is caused by a variety of things – pets, kids, two people sleeping together, thick sheets or a warm comforter – which all contribute to the heat issue. Other than outside elements, the mattress itself needs to be able to circulate warm air and dissipate it to avoid the area where the person or people are sleeping getting too warm and interrupting a peaceful sleep.

With heavier people, the problem is exacerbated because their greater size contributes more heat to the mattress. The problem is increased causing many sleepers to wake up sweating and throwing off the comforter to cool down. After that, it’s difficult to get comfortable once again and fall back to sleep.

Foam mattresses have a reputation for becoming warmer than hybrid or spring ones. There have been considerable advances in recent years with foam formulations and design to deal with the heat retention issue with foam products. Aerated foam, gel memory foam with thinner layers to avoid trapping heat, and thin Talalay latex foam top layers of 1-2-inches do much to address the previous problems with temperature buildup.

Mattresses made of foam often come with a heat rating: cool, neutral, warm. The rating helps provide some indication of how the product manages the heat with one person or a couple sleeping overnight.

With inner spring and coil-on-coil types, there is plenty of space between the coils for warm air to move around. Even spring types with foam wrapped around individual springs still manage heat better relative to all foam types. With hybrid types, spring base foundation layers are matched with Talalay or Dunlop latex or memory foam top layers that add more bounce and softness. Heat buildup is reduced because each additional foam layer is only 1-2 inches and is usually aerated with spaced out holes to let air circulate.

Heat buildup is still mostly attributed to foam type products. There are many types of foam used and this is where buyers run into trouble. Cheap foams are used to create slabs that only add heat to a mattress because of the poor formulation and lack of air flow with inexpensive designs. Companies that put time into research with foam formulation and choose the highest performing materials make a huge difference with heat retention.

Not all foams are created equal. Open cell gel memory foam is cooler than standard memory foam. Latex is often cooler than memory foam. Even elastic polymer mixed with poly foam does well to keep the sleeper cooler while delivering a nice bounce.

Mattress Types

Choosing between different mattress types for a heavier person is not the easiest task. Below we run through the different types of mattresses (and layers used) in the construction of new beds. Each have their own pros and cons which should be considered carefully.

Memory Foam

Memory foam is a material first developed by NASA and later used commercially once the costs of manufacture fell sufficiently. The foam offers a molding factor where it partially responds both to the shape and weight of the body and decompresses accordingly. The way the foam is created helps contour the body gently, which reduces the number of pressure points and the severity of the pressure applied to the body when sleeping on a memory foam mattress. For anyone who suffers bed sores, a memory foam option is certainly a good one to consider.

The possible downside of memory foam is heat retention. In recent years, manufacturers have sought to address the issue with new formulations, aerated foam that lets air circulate, and using a layered mattress structure where no single layer traps air successfully.

An open cell structure is better than a closed cell one. Gel memory foam is also a good option because the small cells are able to break down to manage heat for the sleeper. The wicking nature of the mattress cover is also relevant because many companies now use special fabrics like Rayon that is more breathable.

Latex Foam

Latex mattresses are a good choice for larger people because they offer considerable softness and comfort on the top layer. Many latex mattresses combine a lighter, plush top layer that might be 1 to 4 inches thick with a 6 to 8-inch base poly foam layer that is high density for greater support.

These types of mattresses either use Talalay latex or Dunlop latex. Two different methods of production are used with each type. Talalay tends to be more stable to produce in larger quantities, whereas Dunlop is trickier to produce as a smooth, softer top layer and is often used as a secondary layer with Talalay latex as the smoother top layer solution.

Latex is either naturally produced or synthetically made. The synthetic versions are substantially cheaper than the natural ones, but the natural ones create fewer allergies.

Heat retention is far less of a problem than inexpensive memory foam slabs, especially when multiple 1-2 inch layers are used rather than large 4-inch single slabs of synthetic latex foam.

The bounciness is an improvement with latex over memory foam or poly foam, but falls short of the springiness of a spring coil type. Latex also doesn’t hug the sleeper in the same way that memory foam does, which means it doesn’t trap heat close to the body in the same way. There is still an impression made when sleeping on a top layer of latex foam, but it is more uniform. As such, latex offers good support with greater comfort while managing heat well.

Innerspring

Innerspring remains a popular mattress for its springiness and support level. Where it suffers is the greater pressure points which are often unforgiving for heavier people who sink into the mattress and may feel the coils or wires under them. Newer innerspring designs aim to avoid this issue, but they’re certainly less soft than foam mattresses. Individually foam wrapped spring coils are better than traditional interconnected spring mattresses for greater, localized support in one area of the mattress and less support in another (ideal for one heavier partner and one lighter one).

Pillow top or Euro top mattresses that use innerspring as a base foundation, and usually with a layer of springs on two levels, is an option for people who want the spring support system, but desire more comfort on the top layer. A pronounced Euro top or pillow top mattress is a padding on the top layer that makes the top surface far more comfortable than a traditional innerspring mattresses.

Heat retention is rarely a problem with an inner spring type. It is also the best for edge support where this is a critical feature to have.

Hybrid

The hybrid type comes with multiple layers that utilize one or more types of foam, and spring or other coil types, for suspension support. The advantage of a hybrid version is that it attempts to take the best features of each type of mattress to produce an ideal outcome.

Top layers are often Talalay or Dunlop latex or memory foam to support a softer, floating-on-air feeling, and a considerable reduction in pressure points. The layers are usually quite thin to avoid heat retention and offer a cushioning effect. When a latex layer is included, sleepers appreciate the greater bounciness to the mattress.

Below the softer layers is one or two layers of inner spring or individually wrapped coil springs. Many of these will use poly foam to wrap around each individual coil. The improved back and lumbar support, plus the responsiveness of the spring system, provides compression support.

A hybrid mattress may also simply use different types of foam (latex, memory foam and poly support form) to create a layered, supportive alternative to innerspring foundational options. It depends on the design and foam used whether the heat is managed well within this configuration.

The attractively designed pillow top is the thing that one notices right away. It is a 0.5-inch cool gel, ventilated memory foam layer that conforms to the shape of the body. There are well-placed vents along the sides and edges of the mattress to let heat escape.

Three slim 0.25-inch comfort foam layers follow the pillow top one. The combination of slimmer than normal layers with built in ventilation along the sides and edges of the mattress ensure air flow and lack of heat buildup, which is a chief concern for buyers of foam or hybrid beds. All foam used is CertiPUR-US certified too.

The main foundational layer is a collection of individually wrapped steel coils that ensure hundreds of focused points of support. This type of spring mattress helps isolate movement across the mattress because only the affected coils get depressed or expand with position changes.

The hybrid design is different to other types because it offers ventilated, body conforming upper layers and a springy, responsive foundational layer that uses coiled steel springs. For heavy sleepers, often a hybrid bed presents an interesting new choice to consider carefully.

The quilted, knitted cover is a pretty one for sure. It ensures allergens, germs and dust mites won’t get inside the mattress and interrupt a good night’s sleep.

The best thing about this mattress brand, apart from the comfort that it gives to all those who lie on it, is its ability to dissipate hot air. This is due to the two inches of airflow placed right in the middle of the mattress. So unlike most others, this mattress will never overheat.

FAQ

Q: What is the best depth for a mattress for big people?

A: At least 12 inches of depth is ideal. A 10-inch or shallower depth is usually too limiting.

Q: Is an inner spring mattress better than a foam one?

A: A high-density foam base layer with a softer top layer is still a good choice. Inner spring offers a bouncier, supportive mattress, but the addition of a pillow top or euro top makes it more comfortable. A hybrid type is another way to go.

Q: Should I worry about heat retention?

A: With a larger body, more heat is generated and the mattress will tend to get hotter. It is therefore a good idea to choose a neutral or low temperature type rather than a model that’ll retain heat. Open cell gel memory foam is usually better than poly foam, and latex foam is cooler than most gel memory foam. Inner spring is still likely to be the cooler choice.

Q: I find myself waking up on the very edge of my current mattress. Do I need to worry about this with a new model?

A: Inner spring mattresses are excellent at the edges. With foam types, one has to look on a model by model basis to determine whether it will have sufficient edge support for your needs.

Q: Do mattresses come with maximum carry weight limits are a guidance?

A: Yes, many companies offer such guidance with each model, but it’s not always easy to locate this information.
