Leesa Mattress Review

leesa mattress

Last Updated: May 2017

Leesa is one of the latest innovations in the mattress industry. The pioneers of Leesa were having difficulties sleeping, and could not find a mattress that would provide them with the support that they needed to get a restful night of sleep. They decided to take matters into their own hands, and hence the idea of the Leesa mattress was born.

One of the major disadvantages that the founders of Leesa experienced when purchasing other types of mattresses was the actual purchase process. They found that going to a store, trying out different options and being hovered over by salespeople was very overwhelming. That, coupled with all of the available options, made shopping for a mattress a complicated process.

In order to simplify the process, Lessa founders decided to redesign the mattresses that they offered. The result is a unique design that offers a ‘Universal Adaptive Feel,’ which allows the Leesa mattress to adapt to bodies of all shapes and sizes, as well as sleeping styles. Ideal for couples, the mattress actually adapts to the different body types and sleeping styles of each individual.

Leesa founders also decided to change the approach for selling their mattresses; they are only available online, which cuts out the ‘middle man’ and allows consumers to purchase them directly. This not only eases the stress of shopping under the pressure of a salesperson, but it also reduces costs.

  • Constructed of the highest quality foam materials
  • Very little to no heat retention, providing a sleeping surface that is constantly cool
  • Reasonably priced
  • Very little off-gassing
  • Environmentally and health friendly
  • Easy purchase process; simply order it online and it will be delivered to your home
  • 100 day trial period with a full money back guarantee
  • Easy setup
  • Superior softness
  • Though ordering is easy, the Leesa mattress is only available to purchase online, which means that you won’t be able to try the mattress out before buying.
  • Only one model offered, which is designed for the ‘average’ sleeper. As such, if you enjoy a super soft mattress, or one that is very firm, Lessa may not be the best option for you.

What’s It Made From…

Leesa-Mattress-MaterialsThe Leesa mattress is constructed of three layers of foam: two inches of Avena foam on the top; two inches of contouring memory foam in the middle, and six inches of high-density support foam at the base. In total, this mattress offers 10 inches of comfortable foam that adapts to the body and provides a soft, cool surface to fall to sleep on.

Top Layer

The top layer of the Leesa mattress is constructed of two inches of Avena foam. This foam is comparable to latex foam in that it provides excellent cooling qualities, and offers great bounce and comfort; however, Avena foam is much more durable than latex foam, so it will last longer.

The Avena foam also has a series of holes throughout the top, which allows for increased breathability,  and the material itself is super bouncy and soft, giving this mattress a feeling like no other. The top layer of the Leesa mattress is designed to offer sleepers increased comfort and greater cooling control.

Middle Layer

The middle layer of the Leesa mattress is made of two inches of memory foam. This layer offers deep compression support, as well as pressure relief, reducing pain and allowing you to get a more restful night of sleep. It helps to align the spine, no matter the sleeping position. One of the biggest issues the Leesa founders experienced with other mattresses was that they did not provide proper support for all sleeping positions, hence the reason why they designed the middle layer of their mattress with two inches of memory foam.

Bottom Layer

The bottom layer of the Leesa mattress offers six inches of high-density support foam. This layer serves as a foundational base for the previous two layers, offering an even greater level of support for the spine, as well as the entire body. Because the high-density support foam is also very breathable, it works in conjunction with the middle and top layers, helping to absorb excess heat, thus further ensuring a cooler sleeping surface.

Cover

The three foam layers of the Leesa mattress are wrapped up in a cover that is made of a single piece of polyester-Lycra blend fabric, which offers a smooth and comfortable feel. The cover is very soft and allows you to really experience the feel of the three foam layers, unlike other mattress covers, which tend to be thick and reduce their overall feel. The cover also has a seamless edge, which firmly secures all three layers, further maximizing the comfort of the mattress.

Hands on Review

Leesa-Mattress-ReviewOur goal is to provide those who are considering the Leesa mattress with detailed information related to the build of the mattress, as well as the quality of sleep that it will provide. To do achieve our goal, we have thoroughly assessed the following mattress criteria in this part of our buyer’s guide, which we feel offers real insight into the overall experience the mattress will provide:

Firmness

On a firmness scale of 1 to 10, we give the Leesa mattress a score of 6.5. It is soft, but not too soft, yet firm, but not too firm. In other words, it offers medium firmness, which is great for the average sleeper. The combination of the top layer, which is constructed of Avena foam, adds softness to the middle and bottom layers, which are constructed of firmer foams.

Comfort

Overall, we found that the Leesa mattress offers a level of comfort that we think is truly unique. As soon as you lie down on the mattress, you will notice the feeling of the poly-Lycra blend cover, which is soft, silky and cool. You will also notice the softness of the top layer of Avena foam, which literally hugs your body. Within a few moments of lying down, the memory foam will start to conform to your body shape and your weight, giving you a great layer of support.

Sinkage and motion transfer impact the comfort of a mattress. The Leesa mattress has a moderate level of sinkage, which may not be ideal if you are looking for a firm mattress, but is perfect if you want a soft sleeping surface. The layer of memory foam helps to minimize the transfer of motion, which is ideal for couples, as it will reduce the impact you will feel when your sleeping partner moves.

Pain Relief and Support

At the base of the Leesa mattress is six inches of dense foam, which improves the strength and the durability of the mattress, offering unrivaled support for the core. This layer improves the support of the middle and top layers, adding firmness to the subsequent two layers. Thanks to the bottom layer, the mattress offers proper spinal alignment, which improves the support for the body, thus reducing any pain that is normally experienced while sleeping that you may experience while sleeping on other mattresses. The top layer of Avena foam adds to the pain relief, as it is soft, supple and hugs the body. The memory foam in the center also hugs the body, conforming to the shape of the shape of each individual body shape, size and weight.

It should be noted that we did notice that there was some noticeable shrinkage when we sat on the edge of the bed. In fact, there was about a four-inch sinkage of the mattress when we sat on the edge. Additionally, when we stood in the center of the mattress, we observed that there was also about four inches of sinkage.

Heat Retention

The Leesa mattress does not retain much heat. The Avena foam that covers the top layer of the mattress is extremely breathable, which helps to keep the mattress cool on its own; however, add to the fact that the Avena foam has a series of ‘holes’ in it, which further enhance the breathability, this mattress retains very little heat. The poly-Lycra blend cover is also thin and breathable, adding to the coolness factor of the mattress, and the middle and bottom foam layers are also highly breathable.

Bottom line: The Lessa mattress does not retain a lot of heat, so it will keep you cool while you are sleeping.

Off Gassing

Off-gassing refers to the odor that is associated with a mattress. It is a common problem with mattresses that are constructed of foam materials, as the production of the foam involves the use of chemicals. With the Lessa mattress, off-gassing isn’t a huge issue. That’s because it is free of ozone-depleting chemicals and PDBE flame retardants, as well as heavy metals, such as mercury and lead. It also does not contain formaldehyde, which is notorious for causing odor (and is harmful to your health.)

We did notice the slightest odor when our Leesa mattress arrived, but it was gone within just a few hours of opening it.

Intimacy

Because the Leesa mattress is constructed of three layers of foam, it is less responsive than other types of mattresses. As a result, it doesn’t offer a quick bounce back, which means that you may have to exert a little more energy than you would with other mattresses when engaging in intimate activities on the Leesa.

Sleeping Position Ratings

Because there is no standard sleeping position, we wanted to test the type of support and comfort that the Leesa mattress offers for different positions. Here’s what we found…

Back

The design of the Leesa mattress is best suited for back sleepers, as it offers proper spinal alignment. The plush Avena foam on the surface hugs the body, which makes it particularly comfortable for back sleepers. Additionally, the memory foam in the center and the high-density foam at the base of the mattress reduces pressure on the back and spine, making it particularly comfortable for back sleepers. We should note that this mattress is softer than other types of mattresses, so if you prefer firmness while sleeping on your back, this may not be the best choice for you.

Back Sleeping score: 9.25/10

Stomach

Though some stomach sleepers may find the Leesa mattress comfortable, overall, we don’t think it is the best choice for those who sleep on their stomachs. Because of the sinkage factor, you may find it uncomfortable while sleeping on your stomach, especially if you are on the heavier side.

Stomach Sleeping score: 9/10

Side

Again, the softness of the mattress may not be ideal for side sleepers. We highlight the sinkage factor as the reason for this. If you enjoy a mattress that offers a ‘hugging’ feeling, it may work for you; however, because of the softness, it may not support your spine the way you want it to, which may lead to discomfort.

Side Sleeping score: 9.25/10

Bed Frame Compatibility

The surface you place your mattress on can affect the way that it feels. With that said, the Leesa mattress is best used on a foundation that is sturdy, firm and flat, as this will allow you to get the most out of the signature feeling that it offers. A solid or a slatted base is highly recommended. Avoid slats that are spaced far apart, or that curve, as they will not offer enough support.

The Leesa mattress can also be used on a floor, as it will provide the stability that is needed to thoroughly enjoy the signature feeling that it is designed to offer.

Warranty, Guarantee and Trial Period

  • Warranty: 10 years
  • Guarantee: 100 percent money back guarantee
  • Trial Period: The Leesa Mattress offers a 100 Night Trial Period. If for any reason, you are not satisfied with the mattress within that 100 days, you can return it for a full refund. Simply contact the manufacturer and they will pick it up at no charge to you.

Conclusion

Overall, the Leesa mattress is a very high-quality mattress. It is extremely soft; in fact, it is much softer than many of the other mattresses that we have tried. It also offers a good level of support. We were also very impressed by the minimal heat retention and how cool it remained throughout the night. Made of the highest quality materials, the Leesa mattress is a great option.

Summary

If you are trying to determine whether or not the Leesa mattress is right for you, consider the level of firmness and/or softness that you want your mattress to provide. It is middle of the road, as far as firmness goes. Also, if heat retention is a major factor for you, than Leesa is a great choice because it retains very little heat and remains cool.
