Construction of Each Mattress

The materials of a mattress and the layout of those materials has a tremendous impact on the comfort and support it will deliver. In order to gain a better understanding of the type of sleep you can get on each of these mattresses, here’s a look at their construction.

Construction of Leesa Mattress

Leesa-Mattress-Materials

The Leesa mattress is constructed of three layers high quality foam. Each type of foam material is thoughtfully laid out and creates a mattress that is a total of 10 inches thick. Here’s a more detailed look at the construction of this mattress.

Top Layer

The top layer of the Leesa mattress is constructed of two inches of Avena foam. This foam is very similar to latex foam because it has very minimal heat retention and it offers just the right amount of bounce. Add to that the fact that the makers of the Leesa mattress decided to aerate the Avena foam, and it helps to improve the cooling capabilities of this material.

Middle Layer

In the middle of the Leesa mattress is a layer that is made of two inches of memory foam. The memory foam is highly responsive and quickly responds to the contours of the body, providing just the right amount of support exactly where it is needed the most. It helps to keep the spine properly aligned, which makes it very supportive and reduces pain.

Bottom Layer

The base layer of the Leesa mattress is made of 6 inches of high density support foam. This is the layer of the mattress that serves as a foundational base for the middle and top layers, offering even more support for the spine, as well as the entire body. Because the high density support foam is also very breathable, it works with the middle and top layers, helping to absorb excess heat, thus ensuring that the mattress will stay cool and comfortable throughout the night.

Cover

The Leesa mattress is wrapped in cover that is made of single piece of Lycra-polyester blend fabric. The cover is smooth, comfortable and breathable. The cover is very durable; when we pulled on it, it snapped back into its original position almost immediately.

Construction of Tuft and Needles Mattress

The Tuft and Needles mattress is made of just two separate layers, which includes a 3 inch layer of polyfoam and a 7 inch layer of support foam. These two layers combine to make a mattress that is a total of 10 inches in thickness. Here’s a more detailed look at the construction of this mattress.

Top Layer

On the top of the Tuft and Needles mattress is a three inch layer of polyfoam. This highly durable foam is 2.9 pounds per cubic feet, and it provides an exceptional amount of comfort and support. It conforms to the unique contours of the body, which allows the mattress to provide the right amount of support where it is needed the most. Additionally, the polyfoam is very breathable, which prevents the buildup of heat and allows the mattress to stay cool and comfortable throughout the night.

Bottom Layer

The bottom layer of the Tuft and Needles mattress is made of 7 inches of base support foam. This foam has the ability to support up to 1.8 pounds per cubic foot of weight. This layer serves as the foundation of the mattress, helping it keep its shape and providing additional support for the body, in conjunction with the top layer.

Cover

Like the rest of the mattress, the cover of the Tuft and Needles mattress is very simple in design. Totally white in color, the cover is pretty minimalist in design. It is also very thin, which allows for increased breathability for the mattress, as it wicks heat away from the body and disperses it throughout the rest of the mattress. The cover is also incredible soft, which further adds to the comfort that the Tuft and Needles mattress provides.

Firmness and Support

It is also important to understand the firmness and support each mattress delivers, as these factors directly impact the comfort of the mattress and the type of sleep you can expect to experience. Here is a look at the firmness and support each of these mattresses offers.

Leesa Mattress

On a firmness scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest, we give the Leesa mattress a score of 6.5. It is a little bit firmer than average, which adds to the support that it provides. The foam layers do a great job of delivering deep compression support, as well as pressure point relief. However, we should not that if you are looking for a soft mattress, this one may be too firm for you.

Tuft and Needles Mattress

The Tuft and Needles mattress receives a 6 on a firmness scale of 1 to 10. Like the Leesa mattress, the Tuft and Needles mattress is a bit firmer than neutral, which adds to the support that it provides. Also like the Leesa mattress, the Tuft and Needles mattress is highly supportive, reduces the buildup of pressure in the body, which prevents the development of pain while sleeping. Since it is slightly softer than the Leesa mattress, the Tuft and Needles mattress may be a better option for you if you are looking for a softer mattress.

Sleep Position Ratings

Different sleep positions require different levels of support in order to be comfortable. For that reason, we wanted to assess how both the Leesa and the Tuft and Needles mattresses stacked up regarding the comfort and support that they deliver for different sleeping positions. Here’s what we found.

Leesa Mattress

Back – The Leesa mattress keeps the spine in proper alignment, which makes it an ideal choice for back sleepers. The Avena foam on the surface hugs the unique contours of the body, which makes it particularly comfortable for back sleepers. Add to that the fact that the memory foam in the center and the high density foam on the bottom of the mattress reduces pressure on the back and spine, making it particularly comfortable for back sleepers.

Stomach – The Leesa mattress may be supportive and comfortable for some stomach sleepers; however, it does tend to sink too much, particularly for heavier sleepers, which could make it uncomfortable.

Side – The sinkage factor may be a cause for concern for some side sleepers, as it may sink too much while sleeping on the side. This could potentially lead to pain; however, we think that most side sleepers will find this mattress is supportive.
