Loom & Leaf Mattress Review

Last Updated: May 2017

Loom and Leaf is the latest newcomer to the online bed in a box industry. This luxury mattress was developed by the manufacturers of Saatva, a manufacturer that was at the helm of the online mattress industry, and has been creating high-quality mattresses for more than three years. Constructed of the highest quality materials, which includes a unique combination of conforming gel foam, Visco elastic memory foam, a transition loft pad and a high-density foam, the Loom and Leaf mattress offers a truly unique experience.

The Loom and Leaf mattress is manufactured right here, in the United States. What really sets their mattress apart from the rest is the type of memory foam that they use: It is plant based, which is truly unique. Additionally, the manufacturer uses a cover that is constructed of breathable, organic cotton, which is soft to the touch, hypoallergenic and improves the breathability of the mattress. Add to that the innovative cooling gel, and the Loom and Leaf mattress is sure to provide you with a cool, comfortable and supportive surface to sleep on. Additionally, Loom and Leaf offers two mattress designs: The Relaxed Firm model and the Firm model. So, whether you like a mattress that offers a firmness that gives, or one that offers a firmness that stays firm, you will be sure to find what you are looking for with this company.

What’s It Made From…

loom and leaf-mattress-materials
The Loom and Leaf mattress is 12 inches thick, which makes it a bit thicker than the standard mattress, which is between nine and 10 inches thick. The added thickness of the Loom and Leaf mattress allows for improved compression support, greater comfort, and increased durability.

Loom and Leaf is comprised of four separate layers, which include the following materials:

  • Conforming gel foam
  • Visco elastic memory foam
  • Transition loft pad
  • High-density foam

The Top Layer

The top layer of the Loom and Leaf mattress is made of two inches of the highest quality conforming cooling gel. Essentially, this layer is a mixture of four pounds of memory foam, which is infused with a cooling gel. The cooling gel is infused with a unique ‘gel swirl’ technique, which ensures that the gel is distributed evenly throughout the memory foam, thus penetrating the entire thickness of this top layer. On top of that, the top of the first layer of the matters has a cooling gel spinal panel, which is adhered to the outermost layer of the foam and creates a truly unique cooling capability.

The Second Layer

The second layer of the Loom and Leaf mattress is made of 2.5 inches of visco-elastic memory foam. With a total weight of five pounds, this memory foam serves as the core of the mattress. It offers a high level of deep compression support, and conforms to the body, cradling you and allowing the mattress to truly conform to the body.

The Third Layer

The third layer of the Loom and Leaf mattress is a two-inch transition loft pad. This layer allows the top two layers to work in conjunction with the base layer, literally transitioning the comfort and support that both layers provide. The transition loft pad enhances the comfort, the support, and the body contouring capabilities that the Loom and Leaf mattress offers.

The Fourth Layer

Finally, at the base of the Loom and Leaf mattress is 5.5 inches of high-density foundational foam. This layer acts as a super strong base for the rest of the layers, and aids in its durability, comfort, and support. The base of the mattress really pulls everything together.

The Cover

Though the cover isn’t technically considered a layer, it is important to mention, because it does a lot for the mattress. The cover holds the layers together, adds to the softness and the comfort that the mattress provides, and helps to protect the entire mattress.

The cover of the Loom and Leaf mattress is made of a combination of organic cotton and natural thistle, a natural flame retardant. This blend of fabric is affixed to a thin layer of foam, which adds extra softness to the mattress, and makes it even more comfortable.

Surrounding the edges of the cover is a gold trim, which enhances its appearance and makes it look truly luxurious. There are also handles, which are attached to the sides of the mattress, and make moving the mattress a much easier task.

Hands On Review

loom-and-leaf-mattress-review Our goal in creating this buyer’s guide is to provide you with as much information about the Loom and Leaf mattress as possible. While ordering it online and having it shipped directly from the manufacturer is certainly beneficial, as it eliminates the need to deal with the pressure from salespeople and reduces the overall cost of the mattress, it also eliminates the ability to try the mattress out before you buy it. As such, it is difficult to tell whether or not it will meet your needs.

For that reason, we have included this portion of our buyer’s guide, which offers a detailed review of the important criterion that impacts the overall experience you will have with the mattress. Here, we examine that criterion, which includes:

Below, you will find a more detailed look at each of these aspects of the Loom and Leaf mattress

Firmness

Loom and Leaf offer two different models, each of which offers different firmness levels. The Loom and Leaf Relaxed firm model is middle of the road, as far as firmness goes. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the firmest, we give this model a score of 6.5.

If you prefer a firmer mattress, the Loom and Leaf Firm model is a better choice for you. This model offers a higher degree of firmness; we would give it an 8 on a firmness scale of 1 to 10.

We really like that Loom and Leaf offer two different firmness options, as it makes the mattress more customizable to your needs.

Comfort

In regard to comfort, the Loom and Leaf mattress excels. Whereas most mattresses that are constructed of foam only offer as much as four inches of specialty foams, which is placed on top of a base of support foam, Loom and Leaf offers a total of 6.5 inches of specialty foams, which is truly unique to this mattress.

In addition to the increased level of specialty foams, the cover of the Loom and Leaf mattress ups the comfort level. That’s thanks to the organic cotton that the top is made out of, which is backed by yet another layer of thin foam. As soon as you lie down on this mattress, you will immediately notice how comfortable it is.

We would also like to point out that this mattress has virtually no motion transfer. This means that you will barely feel your partner moving while you are sleeping, further improving the comfort that this mattress provides.

Pain Relief and Support

After just a few seconds of lying on the mattress, the cover and upper layer of foam will give way to the support layers. They start doing their job almost immediately, reacting to the pressure of your body. The mattress slightly hugs your body, conforming to its shape and weight; however, it doesn’t aggressively hug your body, so you don’t feel as if you are trapped in it; a problem that often occurs with memory foam mattresses.

Additionally, the Loom and Leaf mattress does aid in pain relief. The specialty layers of foam disperse your weight, helping to alleviate pressure points. With that said, we have experienced mattresses that do a better job of reducing pain.

Heat Retention

Unlike many other similar mattresses, which offer a top layer that has an ‘open’ grid or weave construction for increased breathability, the Loom and Leaf mattress actually has a top layer that is infused with cooling gel, which is infused throughout the high quality foam, ensuring that it penetrates the entire thickness of the foam. Add to that the addition of a cooling gel spinal panel and the Loom and Leaf mattress retains very little heat and stays cool while you sleep.

Off Gassing

We were also impressed by the minimal off-gassing of the Loom and Leaf mattress. Off gassing is a common complaint with memory foam mattresses. It refers to the odor that is emitted from the foam, which comes from the chemicals that are used during the manufacturing process. We didn’t notice any off gassing when we received our Loom and Leaf mattress. Once it was opened up and took its shape, it was ready to be used; no odor whatsoever.

Intimacy

Intimacy may be a slight issue for you with the Loom and Leaf mattress. Not unlike other memory foam mattresses, there is a little bounce back with this mattress. While this is great for comfort, it is not so great for intimacy and will require you to exercise a little more effort when it comes to any intimate activities that you may engage in on the mattress.

Sleeping Position Ratings

We also wanted to assess the level of comfort and support that the Loom and Leaf mattress offered for all sleep positions. Below, you will find a detailed look at how this mattress will work for your specific sleep position.

Back

The back is the best sleep position for the Loom and Leaf mattress. This memory foam contours to your body, helping to reduce pressure points along the spine, neck, and shoulders. The bottom layers of the mattress offer a decent level of support, which is ideal for back sleepers.

Back Sleeping score: 9.5/10

Stomach

Most stomach sleepers will also enjoy the comfort and support that the Loom and Leaf mattress offers; however, not all will. Heavier stomach sleepers may find that the memory foam engulfs them too much, and it may make them feel as if they are ‘stuck’ in the mattress. It’s worth remembering there are two versions of the mattress available one which is much softer than the other, so depending on your size/weight and sleeping preference you may prefer the softer version for stomach sleeping.

Stomach Sleeping score: 9/10

Side

Average and light weight side sleepers should also experience a good night sleep on the Loom and Leaf mattress; however, as with stomach sleepers, heavier side sleepers may not find that this mattress offers the support and comfort that they are looking for. Again, this is due to the thick layer of memory foam, which may conform too much to the body, making you feel as if it is cradling you too much.

Side Sleeping score: 9/10

Bed Frame Compatibility

Due to the thickness of the Loom and Leaf mattress, we recommend using a bed frame that is as solid and stable as possible. Frames that have slats with wide spaces between them, or that bow, will not provide the necessary support to secure the mattress; thus, you will not be able to gain the benefits that this bed provides.

If you really want to experience all that the design of the Loom and Leaf mattress offers, we suggest using either a platform foundation, or one that has slats that have minimal gaps between them, and that are solid and will not bow.

Warranty, Guarantee and Trial Period

  • Warranty: 15 years; five years longer than the standard 10-year warranty on most comparable mattresses
  • Guarantee: 100% money back guarantee
  • Trial Period: 120 Day Trial Period, which is, again, longer than the standard trial period offered for most mattresses (100 days.) If, for any reason, you are not satisfied with the Loom and Leaf mattress, simply contact the manufacturer and they will pick it up and refund your money, no questions asked. The mattress will either be recycled or will be donated to a local charity.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Loom and Leaf mattress really is a high-quality mattress. We were impressed by the powerful cooling capabilities that it offers, as well as the high amount of specialty foams. With two firmness options, you do have the ability to customize the mattress to better suit your needs, which we liked, too. However, it does offer little bounce back, and if you are not used to memory foam, it may not be for you.
