Nolah Mattress Review

Last Updated: March 2018

The Nolah mattress is the brainchild of Anna Hjoellund and Denial Galle, the inventors of SilkFX, an award-winning company that specializes in creating truly revolutionary sleep products. Together, the duo has nearly two decades of experience, and they decided to set their sights on creating a cutting edge mattress that would meet the needs of all sleepers. The result: The Nolah mattress.

The makers of Nolah dove deep into assessing the quality of mattresses that are currently offered on the market. The found that the two most common materials used to create mattresses – latex and memory foam – are outdated in comparison to the more sophisticated technologies; and, since Nolah is a company that is powered by technology, they wanted to make sure that they created the most advanced mattress possible, using materials that are far superior than the materials that other mattress companies use.

After conducting extensive research and doing countless tests, this manufacturer created a truly forward thinking product: The Nolah Air Foam mattress.

This mattress is designed to be 100 percent temperature neutral, is free of the harmful chemicals that are often used in memory foam, and provides a mattress that is not only comfortable and supportive but one that is good for your health.

What’s It Made From…

nolah-mattress-layers
Made of three layers of foam, including the Nolah Air Foam, Avena foam, and polyfoam, the Nolah mattress is a total of 10 inches thick. All materials are exceptional in terms of quality, and all are Certi-PUR-US certified, which means that they aren’t made of any volatile chemicals that are harmful to your health or to the environment, such as:

  • Ozone depleters
  • PBDE, TDCPP or TECP flame retardants
  • Mercury, lead or other heavy metals
  • Formaldehyde
  • Phthalates

Additionally, all materials have a low volatile organic compound, which means there are minimal emissions that impact indoor air quality.

The Top Layer

The first layer of the Nolah mattress is made of two inches of the revolutionary Nolah Air Foam. This material contains billions of microscopic air capsules, which are infused into the foam. Each of these air capsules serves as a shock absorber and helps to evenly distribute pressure throughout the mattress. The top layer not only provides exceptional comfort, but it also provides pressure point relief and helps to relieve any pain that is often experienced while sleeping.

The Middle Layer

The next layer of the Nolah mattress is made of 1 inch of Avena memory foam. Avena foam is made to react like latex; however, it is not made with the same chemicals that are used in the manufacturing process of latex. Additionally, Avena foam offers more consistent airflow, which allows the Nolah mattress to sleep cool, as it pulls body heat away from the sleeper and disperses it out of the mattress. It’s also hypoallergenic and is much more durable than latex.

The Bottom Layer

The third layer of the Nolah mattress is made of 7 inches of poly foam. This foam serves as the foundation for the two upper layers of the mattress and helps it retain its shape. Polyfoam also adds to aids in compression and reduces pressure points, further adding to the comfort and support that the Nolah mattress is designed to provide.

The Cover

The three layers of the Nolah mattress are surrounded by a cover that is made of natural viscose. The manufacturers chose this material because it naturally wicks moisture and heat away from the body, allowing for a cooler, an essentially, a more comfortable night of sleep. This natural viscose wraps the entire mattress, which makes the Nolah mattress one of the only manufacturers to offer a cover that offers a complete 360 degree wrapped cover.

As far as aesthetics go, Nolah really put some thought into the design of their cover. The design is inspired by nature and is intended to represent the sun rising up over the Colorado mountains.

Hands on Review

Nolah Mattress Review The Nolah mattress is only available to purchase online and ships directly from the manufacturer. This certainly helps to reduce any pressure that you would normally feel when shopping, and it also helps to bring down the cost of the mattress. On the downside, though, because you can only purchase the Nolah mattress online, you can’t try it out before you buy it. As a result, it’s difficult to determine whether or not it will meet your expectations and provide you with the type of comfort and support you are looking for.

In this section of our buyer’s guide, we review the most fundamental criteria that impact the overall quality of the mattress so that you can determine whether or not it is a good choice for you. The criterion we assessed includes:

Firmness

Nolah is a medium firmness mattress. On a firmness scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest, we give the Nolah a score of 6. This means that it isn’t too soft or too firm, but rather ‘just right,’ in regard to firmness, for any weight and body shape.

Thanks to the medium level of firmness, this mattress offers an ample amount of conformity when pressure is applied to it; however, thanks to the Avena foam, it reacts quickly to the body.

Comfort

Overall, we found that the Nolah mattress was very comfortable for the average sleeper. The top layer of Nolah Air Foam really does an amazing job of providing an exceptional layer of comfort for the mattress. There isn’t too much sinkage, so you won’t feel like you are trapped in the mattress. Additionally, because it is designed to absorb the shock of movement, motion transfer won’t be an issue for you, which really does add to the comfort that the mattress provides; particularly for couples.

Pain Relief and Support

The Nolah Air Foam is infused with millions of microscopic capsules. Each of these capsules absorb shock and distributes pressure throughout the mattress. As a result, the Nolah mattress does an incredible job of relieving pressure points and reducing any pain that you might normally experience when sleeping on another mattress.

The Avena foam layer is highly reactive and starts to provide pressure relief almost immediately. It also helps to keep the spine in proper alignment, which improves support and reduces pain.

Heat Retention

Both the Avena foam and the Nolah Air Foam work to provide great air circulation for this mattress. They pull heat and moisture away from the body, which helps to reduce heat retention. As a result, the Nolah mattress remains cool and comfortable throughout the night. In fact, we didn’t experience any heat whatsoever. The lack of heat retention adds to the comfort that the mattress provides.

Off Gassing

We were very pleased with the level of off-gassing produced by the Nolah mattress; or, shall we say the complete lack of off-gassing.

Off-gassing refers to the odor that is often associated with a new mattress. It’s particularly a problem for mattresses that are made of foam, as there are certain chemicals that are used in the production of the foam that have a significant odor.

Because the Nolah mattress is CertiPUR-US Certified, none of the chemicals that create that odor are present. This means that there is absolutely no off-gassing with this mattress, and it can be used as soon as it is removed from the packaging and takes its full shape.

Intimacy

Though the Nolah mattress is comprised only of foam, we were very impressed by the amount of bounce that it provides. This is due to the layer of Avena foam at the core of the mattress. With a similar feel to latex, Avena foam quickly responds to movement; however, unlike latex, it isolates motion transfer. As a result, any intimate activities that you set out to embark on will not require additional effort; however, you won’t be disturbed by any motion while you are sleeping.

Sleeping Position Ratings

We wanted to test out how the Nolah mattress delivered in terms of comfort and support for all sleep positions. Since different amounts of pressure are applied to the mattress in different positions, the mattress needs to be able to support that pressure in order to deliver comfort for all positions.

We looked at how the Nolah functioned for back, stomach and side sleepers. Here’s what we found…

Back

Back sleepers will enjoy the Nolah mattress. The top layer of air capsules that are encased in the Nolah air foam absorb pressure, allowing the weight that is placed on the mattress while sleeping on the back to be evenly distributed. Additionally, this mattress provides a minimal level of sinkage while lying on the back, which won’t make you feel like you are being excessively cradled.

Back Sleeping score: 9/10

Stomach

We think that stomach sleepers will also enjoy the Nolah mattress. Again, the unique top layer of Air Foam absorbs the pressure that is placed on the mattress and distributes it throughout all of the layers, thereby providing just the right amount of pressure relief while sleeping on the stomach.

Stomach Sleeping score: 8.75/10

Side

Side sleepers, too, will enjoy the Nolah mattress. Yet again, this is due to the top layer of Nolah Air Foam, as it absorbed pressure from all points. As a result, you will enjoy great pressure point relief while sleeping on your side. Additionally, your spine will remain in the proper position, which further adds to the comfort and support that the mattress provides.

Side Sleeping score: 9/10

Bed Frame Compatibility

The Nolah mattress is designed to be used with all bed frames, including:

  • Platforms
  • Slats
  • Box springs
  • Adjustable beds

As long as the surface is flat, you will be able to take advantage of the comfort and support that the Nolah mattress is designed to offer. We should note, however, that you should avoid using a foundation that has slats that are spaced more than 3 inches apart, or that are made out of a material that bows, as this will certainly impact the quality of sleep the mattress is intended to provide.

Warranty, Guarantee and Trial Period

  • Warranty: 15-year limited warranty. If you experience any manufacturing defects or damages in your Nolah mattress within 15 years of the date of purchase, you can contact the company and they will either repair or replace it.
  • Guarantee: Full money back guarantee
  • Trial Period: 120 night trial period. If you are not happy with this mattress, for any reason, within 120 days from the date you purchase it, you can contact the company and they will fully refund your money, and remove the mattress for you.

Conclusion

The Nolah mattress is one of the most innovatively designed mattresses on the market today. Comprised of the unique and cutting edge Nolah Air Foam, this mattress not only provides great breathability, but it also provides exceptional support.
