Best Memory Foam Bed Reviews

To help you make the right decision, here are some of the best memory foam bed reviews.

It’s a polarizing topic. Some people love the hugging feel of a memory foam mattress, while others detest it. And then there’s the issue of defining what is memory foam to begin with.

Taking all the different definitions into account, we’ve gathered a handful of the most popular mattresses that are taking the internet and bedrooms by storm. Check out how memory foam mattresses rocketed to fame (there’s a hint in there), and read through the best memory foam bed reviews to find out for yourself which one would be awesome for you!

How Memory Foam Beds Became the “It” Mattress

It used to be that mattresses were only available in mattress stores or department stores. And the only type available were coil spring beds with box spring supports. And then seemingly out of nowhere came the Tempur-Pedic, which changed the game for mattress buyers. The material, which was supportive, durable, and comfortable, had been created for NASA and its astronauts. And then it was available to everyone, but it came at a high cost.

In 2014, a bed-in-a-box company created the concept of selling foam mattresses online and it took off. Part of the company’s success is because it was able to reduce the price of the mattress, thanks to low overhead costs and fewer logistics issues that mattress companies still face (shipping large mattresses is expensive, yo).

Then a bunch of businesses bloomed online, and you can find a plethora of mattress-in-a-box shops, but online only. Most of them do not manufacture their own mattresses, so you’re kind of getting the same mattress from each company, but with the layers stacked a little differently and a different label slapped on it.

Here, you’ll find some of the best foam mattresses available, and vetted for authenticity:

1. New Purple Mattress

You may recognize the name “Purple” from the quirky and funny videos the mattress company’s marketing team has produced. The original mattress got all kinds of attention for its unique grid comfort layer, and its head-to-head battle with traditional memory foam mattresses. Now Purple has introduced its newest mattress that comes in three different comfort levels. You can pick up the Purple 2, 3, or 4, and it all correlates with the thickness of the comfort grid you’re buying. Choose the 2-inch for a firmer feel, or all the way up to the 4-inch one for supreme softness.

Another difference between this new Purple mattress and its older version (and other foam mattresses) is that the company decided to make it a hybrid by adding a layer of pocketed coils to provide more support, more motion isolation, and durability. Overall, the new Purple mattress gets good reviews for improving on an already good design, but it’s much pricier, and you may still have issues with getting enough support. Bottoming out is less of a concern, but if the grid fails, you may be stuck on a hard, not-so-comfortable mattress. Oh, and Purple manufactures their own mattresses.

Specs

Material: Polymer foam, springs, patented materials

Feel: Medium-firm to Soft

Sizes: Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King

Trial: 100 nights

Warranty: 10 years

The new Purple mattress includes pocketed coils to extend the life of this mattress and provide more support for those who want a comfy, but sturdy mattress.

2. The Casper

If there’s any memory foam mattress company out there that you should recognize by now it’s Casper. It was this company that started the online craze for beds-in-boxes. The Casper is the middle-of-the-road option of its three mattress choices, and it’s the most popular because it has that magical Goldilocks just right feel to it. Then again, not everyone feels this way, so it’s possible that the Casper mattress could be too soft and not supportive enough.

The motion isolation that memory foam is known for is present in this mattress, so you can count on not feeling your sleeping partner move at night. Plus, this mattress is made of perforated foam layers, which promotes airflow, so you shouldn’t get too hot when you sleep on it. The lack of edge support may be a deal breaker for you, but overall, it’s a good mattress at a reasonable price.

Specs

Material: Four different types of foam

Feel: Medium-firm

Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King

Trial: 100 nights

Warranty: 10 years

Unless you require a super-firm surface, the Casper could be a good mattress for you.

3. Tuft & Needle

Rather than stacking layer after layer of foam, the people at Tuft & Needle kept their flagship mattress simple with just two layers. The top layer is a bit thinner, and it’s meant to provide pressure relief and comfort. Underneath that is a thicker layer of support foam that’s dense and durable. Together the two layers provide a mattress that gives the support you need and the comfort you want. The top layer, which is made of “adaptive foam,” a proprietary blend, is meant to be cool and breathable, so you don’t sweat at night, which memory foam is known for.

Other than the comfort and breathability, Tuft & Needle has become known as one of the most affordable foam mattresses out there. It comes in at about half or less of some of the top brands’ prices. It helps that it’s also suitable for many people of different weights and sizes, which is not the case with many other mattresses. The medium level of firmness hits that sweet spot for those who like a firmer feel and those who prefer a soft, cloud-like feel.

Specs

Material: Two different types of foam

Feel: Medium-firm

Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King

Trial: 100 nights

Warranty: 10 years

The Tuft & Needle attempts to give its customers a suitable surface for sleeping regardless of preference – firm, soft, or somewhere in between.

4. Amerisleep AS3

The creators of Amerisleep mattresses understand that one-size-fits-all doesn’t quite work all the time with beds. That’s why they offer five different mattresses at varying levels of firmness. The Amerisleep AS3, what was once known as the Liberty, is made with three layers of foam that are meant to support, cool, and resist sagging. The AS3 is smack in the middle of the firmness scale for Amerisleep, but many consumers report that it’s bit firmer than that.

Back sleepers might like this mattress, as they would need a firmer surface to begin with. Also, those who weigh a bit more might find the foam a bit more contouring than those who are lighter in weight. A stomach sleeper might even enjoy dozing on this mattress, but it seems side sleepers are largely disappointed. Still, this is an affordable mattress, especially if you can get it during a promotion.

Specs

Material: Three different types of foam

Feel: Medium

Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King, Split King

Trial: 100 nights

Warranty: 20 years

Amerisleep gives you five options when it comes to their mattresses, and the AS3 is the company’s middle-of-the-road firmness choice, which should be a medium firmness feel.

5. Fleep Bed

If you’ve ever had a hard time deciding on a mattress when trying one out in the store because the firm one felt good, but so did the soft one, then the Fleep Bed was made with you in mind. Rather than creating one mattress to rule them all with one level of firmness, or several mattresses in different levels of firmness, there’s one mattress with two different levels of support, softness, and contouring. On one side, you get two layers of foam – one meant to provide firm support and another with a bounce back and springiness of a firmer bed. Flip it over and you’ll get soft support, but also a contouring and hugging feel.

Both sides are made of perforated gel-infused memory foam on the top layers, which contributes to a cooler sleep. Perhaps the biggest issue with this bed is if you have a co-sleeper who prefers firm or soft, and it’s different from your preference. There’s also little edge support, but that’s common for foam mattresses.

Specs

Material: Four different types of foam

Feel: Firm to soft

Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King

Trial: 111 nights

Warranty: 10 years

The Fleep Bed is one of those mattresses that caters to the indecisive, but it’s also a good option for those who want options in one mattress.

The Bottom Line

When it comes to mattress shopping today, you have plenty of choices, and especially when it comes to finding a great, or the best, memory foam bed. Decide for yourself which one is best for you, and take your time – all these come with at least 100-night free trials, so there’s no risk in trying them out at home, and making your decision after three months of sleep on each one.
