The Zenhaven mattress is made by Saatva, one of the most trusted names in the bed in a box mattress industry. Saatva is committed to providing consumers with high quality mattresses that are truly comfortable and offer a restful and restorative night of sleep, yet are affordable. The company wanted to create a mattress that was made of all natural materials that are good for sleepers and good for the environment; hence, the Zenhaven mattress.
The Zenhaven mattress is handcrafted in the United States and made of all natural materials, including 100 percent American Talalay latex, 100 percent organic New Zealand wool and a cover that is constructed of plush organic cotton. There are four separate layers of this mattress, all of which are comprised of Talalay latex; however, each layer of this latex has a different indentation load deflection (ILD,) which provides each layer with a different feeling and allows it to perform a different function. Combined, the four layers create a mattress that is a total thickness of 10 inches. What is really unique about the Zenhaven mattress is that can be flipped, which is not something that you can do with other mattresses of the same caliper (foam and hybrid.)
In order to reduce the cost of the mattress, yet still provide consumers with a high quality sleeping surface, Saatva only sells the Zenhaven mattress online. It is shipped directly from the manufacturer’s facility in the United States to you, the consumer. This reduces overhead costs, which does bring down the overall purchase price; however, on the downside, it means that you can’t try the mattress out before you buy it. As a result, it can be difficult to tell if it will suit your needs.
We tested the Zenhaven mattress out and provide our in-depth analysis of our findings in this review in order to give you a better idea of its construction and feel. After reading this review, you will have a better idea if the Zenhaven mattress is the right choice for you.
- 20 year warranty
- No off gassing
- No heat retention
- Can only be purchased online
- Can’t try before you buy
The Plush Beds mattress is a fair competition for the Zenhaven mattress. Both are made with Talalay latex; however, the Zenhaven mattress has four layers – all of which are made of Talalay latex – and the Plush Beds mattress only has three layers, two of which are made of materials other than Talalay latex.
The Brooklyn Bedding mattress is also a fair competition for the Zenhaven mattress. Again, both are made with Talalay latex; however, the Brooklyn mattress has three layers, only one of which is made of Talalay latex, while the Zenhaven mattress has four separate layers, all of which are made of Talalay latex.
Below is our final score of the Zenhaven Mattress based on multiple criteria that we use when testing all of our mattresses.
What’s It Made From…
Zenhaven is an all natural mattress that is made entirely of Talalay latex. There are four separate layers, all of which are made of this natural latex material. Together, the four layers make a mattress that is a total of 10 inches thick.
Here’s a more detailed look at the construction of the Zenhaven mattress.
The Top Layer
On the top of the Zenhaven mattress is a 1.5 inch layer of Talalay latex. This is the layer that provides the mattress with its comfort. It has a 5 zone comfort layer, which not only offers comfort, but also offers support. The latex conforms to the body and is highly responsive, which allows it to offer pressure point relief. The Talalay latex also has natural cooling properties. It pulls heat away from the body, preventing it from building up on the surface of the mattress and keeping it cool.
The Second Layer
Next, there is a 3 inch layer of Talalay latex. This layer of latex has an indentation load deflection (ILD) of 25 to 29. Indentation load deflection measures how hard or soft the latex foam is. Because the Talalay latex in the second layer of the Zenhaven mattress is thicker than the top layer, it provides a great deal of pressure point relief, as well as support.
The Third Layer
The third layer of the Zenhaven mattress is made of 3 inches of Talalay latex. This layer has an ILD of 30 to 34. When the mattress is lying so that the softer side is positioned on the top, this layer of Talalay latex serves as a transitional support layer; but, when it is flipped, it becomes the second layer and it creates a firmer mattress, as it gives more push back on the top layer.
The Fourth Layer
On the bottom of the Zenhaven mattress is a 1.5 inch layer of Talalay latex. This layer provides additional support for the top three layers of the mattresses, and it gives the mattress its shape. However, when the mattress is flipped over, this layer becomes the top of the mattress, creating a firmer sleeping surface.
Do keep in mind that the Zenhaven mattress can be flipped, as we have discussed, which means that the bottom and the top layers of the mattress are mainly intended to serve as comfort layers; however, the mattress is firmer when it is flipped on one side and softer on the other, which creates a mattress that has two totally different feelings.
Encompassing the four layers of the Zenhaven mattress is a cover that is constructed of organic cotton. Underneath the organic cotton, a layer of Joma wool is sewn into each side of the cover. This wool has natural moisture wicking abilities and natural temperature regulating abilities. It helps to draw heat away from the body and maintains a cooler sleeping. The organic cotton is also highly breathable, so when combined with the Joma wool, this cover has an excellent ability to create a sleeping surface that maintains a comfortable temperature throughout the night. Also, since there is Joma wool sewn into both the top and bottom of the cover, you have the ability to experience its abilities, no matter what side the mattress is turned on.
Hands on Review
As we have already mentioned, the Zenhaven mattress can only be purchased online. This factory direct model does help to reduce the cost of the mattress and allows you to avoid dealing with the high pressure tactics that salespeople often use; however, it also means that you can’t try the mattress out before you buy it. As such, it can be hard to determine if it is actually the right choice for you.
To help you gain a better understanding of this mattress, we have performed a detailed analysis of the key elements of the mattress that affect its comfort and its quality. The elements that we assessed include:
What is really neat about the Zenhaven mattress is that it offers two different firmness levels in one mattress. This is because you have the ability to flip it. When the mattress is positioned so that the softer side is facing up, it has a firmness rating of a 4.5 on a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest.) When the mattress is flipped so that the firmer side is facing up, the mattress has a firmness rating of 6.5 on a scale of 1 to 10 (again, 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest.)
This mattress offers a fantastic degree of comfort. Since you have the ability to choose either a firm surface or a soft surface, you can customize it to meet your specific needs, which really allows you to determine the comfort that it will offer. Additionally, the Talalay latex has a nice degree of bounce to it, which makes it easy to get in and out of the bed, and it also makes it easy to move around in the mattress.
Bounce is usually equated to creating a lot of motion transfer; however, that is not true with the Zenhaven mattress. In fact, it offers an impressive amount of motion transfer, which means that you won’t have to worry about feeling anyone move around and disrupting your sleep – making this an ideal choice for couples who share a sleeping surface.
Pain Relief and Support
The Zenhaven mattress offers an impressive amount of pain relief and support. The varying IDL levels of the Talalay latex allow the mattress to provide pressure point relief and deep compression support. Both of these factors help to minimize the tension that is placed on the body, thereby reducing any pain that you would normally develop on other types of standard mattresses.
Overheating is one of the most common causes of sleep disruption. The Zenhaven mattress does a good job of tending to this issue. The Talalay latex is highly breathable, which means that any heat that the mattress absorbs is escapes the mattress. Additionally, the organic cotton and Jola wool cover is also high breathable, has natural moisture wicking abilities and is a natural heat regulator. In other words, the cover works in conjunction with the Talalay latex to create a mattress that will remain cool and comfortable throughout the night.
Off gassing refers to the smell that a new mattress can emit. There are many new mattresses that have this issue; however, this was not the case with the Zenhaven mattress. It is made of all natural materials, which we believe is the reason why there isn’t any issue with off gassing.
The Talalay latex used in the Zenhaven mattress has an excellent amount of bounce, which does wonders for those amorous activities. While there is a good bit of bounce, it still does a great job of reducing motion transfer.
Sleep Position Ratings
We also assessed the comfort and support for different sleep positions. Here is what we found…
Back sleepers will find that this mattress offers a great amount of comfort and support, especially when it is flipped so that the firmer side is facing up. It offers deep compression support, which reduces the development of pain while sleeping on the back.
Back Sleeping score: 9/10
Stomach sleepers, too, should enjoy this mattress; particularly when it is flipped so that the softer side is facing up. It cradles to the body, yet doesn’t make you feel as if you are stuck in the mattress.
Stomach Sleeping score: 8.75/10
We also think that side sleepers will find this mattress comfortable and supportive. It keeps the spine in proper alignment and helps to reduce the buildup of pressure in certain points throughout the body.
Side Sleeping score: 8.75/10

The Zenhaven mattress is designed to be compatible with all types of bed frames, including:
- Platform beds
- Box springs
