Things to consider
Materials
Energex foam
Energex foam from Elite Foam is used by several mattress manufacturers including Dreamfoam Bedding in their Arctic Dreams product which we review in this guide. The newer foam has a greater response to foam deforming pressure (or pressure release) than viscoelastic foam. Pressure relief is also superior to poly foam with an open structure that offers an alternative to pricey latex or a coil spring mattress. The Energex foam keeps cooler than many others and is useable across a wider range of room temperatures.
Memory foam
Memory foam and gel memory foam are two foam types that contour and mold to the shape of the body. Reformation response time is quick depending on the foam type. Gel memory foam has hundreds of gel beads that assist in keeping the sleeping material cooler. Standard memory foam tends to get warm and benefits from the use of thin 1 to 1.5-inch layers to avoid trapping heat.
Aerated foam, with regular holes through the layer, assist air flow and heat control. Quite often memory foam lacks sufficient bounce compared to memory foam, poly foam, and most coil spring types. For this reason, sometimes memory foam is used below a bouncier top layer on modern mattress products.
Latex foam
Talalay latex or Dunlop latex are the two most common latex materials used. Latex is either synthetic or natural, with the natural option being long-lasting but considerably more expensive. Talalay latex is easier to produce consistently and is often seen as a top layer because it has a more predictable manufacturing outcome and a softer feel.
A latex layer is sometimes included as a top layer of a multi-layered mattress to offer more bounce which a memory foam mattress usually lacks.
Poly foam
Polyurethane foam is an older type that is still regularly used today, particularly in cheaper mattresses and as a high-density foam base layer. The material continues to evolve with new improvements and refinements to its formulation to make it suitable for more products.
Coils + Foam
Spring mattresses either use dual spring racks of interconnected springs with foam layer separators between the racks or hundreds of separate coils wrapped in foam for improved motion isolation. In many ways, support is the best when compared to other types. For comfort, increasingly products are offered with plush Euro top or Pillow top covers with a soft filling or latex/memory foam top layers.
Sleeping Position
There are mattresses that are better suited to side, back and stomach sleepers. The reason for the differences is that pressures are placed on the body in different ways when sleeping on your back vs. on your side.
On your side, pressure is largely removed from the back and spine areas, but the head, shoulder and arm touching the mattress on one side experience greater pressure from lying on them all night. A plush top layer is helpful in this position.
On your stomach, pressure on the belly and pelvis is higher causing discomfort unless the mattress offers a plush top layer and a greater level of firmness than a side sleeper requires.
On your back, the spine must be correctly aligned to avoid waking with unnecessary aches and pains.
Firmness
With firmness, it runs on a rising scale from 1 to 10 (10 is the firmest). In many situations, a middle of the road 5 to 6 firmness level is suitable across different types of sleepers and sleep positions. A plush (very soft) mattress may suit some people, but likely one person from a couple will find it difficult to sleep on because of the lack of support. Equally, an extremely firm mattress is difficult to sleep on for most people because it has little “give” in it.
One selection modification to the above is the optional pillow top or euro top cover, or a top layer of Talalay latex or memory foam which is softer and smooths out a firm mattress. Alternatively, a mattress topper provides some temporary relief from an overly firm mattress. With an overly soft mattress, there isn’t much that is possible to rectify or workaround that issue. Therefore, going plush throughout the mattress needs careful consideration as it will often be a bad decision unless there is a medical reason for the purchase.
Budget
With Amazon mattresses, price is less of an issue that it was when mattress superstores were the only way to buy a new bed. Prices regularly get down into the three-figure range for quality brands and the latest foam technologies. Lower prices are also possible when avoiding California King, King or Queen size options which will stretch anyone’s budget.
Trial Period
Online mattresses often come with a trial period aka night trial. The startup mattress companies that sell exclusively online tend to almost always offer a free trial period where the buyer can return the mattress before the trial is over for a full refund.
Night trials range from 45 nights (Dreamfoam Bedding) to Tuft & Needle (100-night trial). Other manufacturers offer even longer trial periods in some cases. The trial is particularly useful for buyers who are nervous about buying a new mattress online which they couldn’t test out in person.
With foam products, they need to expand over a few days or one week. Occasionally, a new mattress is faulty and fails to expand fully in all areas. In this case, the mattress is returnable under the basic multi-night trial period without needing to get into the warranty period and coverage offered.
Warranty Period
The warranty period is different with each mattress and company. Some offer only a one year warranty whereas others are 10-years, 20-years, and even 25-years in one or two cases.
