Best Amazon Mattress

Last Updated: January 2018

Amazon is the dominant e-commerce platform with its broad selection of products, quick delivery, and appealing pricing. As technology has evolved and shopping tastes have been changing, mattress companies focused solely on marketing their products to mattress showrooms that commercially mark up the prices to unattractive levels have been looking again at this business model.

In more recent times, with the advent of improved online retail options and the availability of clearer information for shoppers, startup mattress companies have sprung up that specialize in offering their products either directly through Amazon (sometimes with an exclusive agreement) or via their websites. Rather than holding vast inventory in their warehouses, these businesses remain nimble, creating a limited line of mattresses (sometimes a single all-in-one product solution), and ship it directly to Amazon’s warehouses.

The traditional tried and true approach having to deal with mattress salespeople has become somewhat out of vogue with the growing interest in online shopping. Whereas once it seemed strange not to be able to touch a garment before buying it or lay on a mattress before purchasing it, consumers are relying on accurate product information and honest customer reviews to make their buying decisions now.

For consumers, this sea change in buying habits has led to a dramatic reduction in the cost of many goods. No less so with mattresses where the days of a mattress costing several thousand dollars for a king size bed seem to be quickly disappearing for affordable, feature-rich, technology-led bedding solutions that address most, if not all, of the previous concerns unhappy buyers had when going to retail stores previously.

In this guide, we review the most popular mattresses available through Amazon. Many of these products are sold directly through the world’s largest e-commerce platform under an exclusive arrangement. We examine factors like construction, design, materials, performance for different types of sleepers (side, back and stomach positions), and other criteria that we feel is important to customers in making a smart buying decision.

Our Best Amazon Mattress Recommendations

Zinus Memory Foam 12 Inch Green Tea Mattress

The Zinus Memory Foam 12 Inch Green Tea Mattress is an aromatic product that does better than most with unwanted odors.

The product comes in three thicknesses: 8-inches, 10-inches, and 12-inches. We review the 12-inch model here. It also comes in six sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King. Some of the sizes are only available in certain thicknesses.

The appearance of the mattress is like a single piece of thick foam, but comprised of foam layers which each perform a unique role within the product.

The first layer is a 3-inch memory foam one that lets sleepers comfortably sink into the foam while it holds their body’s contour perfectly. Whether on the heavy side or the light side, the top layer is ample to create a comfortable sleeping environment.

The second layer is a 2-inch comfort foam which offers a greater level of support for the body. The third layer is 3.5-inch high-density thick air flow foam providing increasing support through the mattress while managing heat retention well. The final layer is a 3.5-inch base foam layer that reduces motion transfer while sleeping and provides a solid foundation for the three layers above it.

The use of memory foam at the top layer adds the hugging factor when first lying on it which then molds to the shape of the body.

What sets this mattress apart is the three measures taken with the foam to make it continue to have a pleasant aroma over its lifetime. Active charcoal and green tea extract are mixed into the foam to handle the odor releases. Natural plant oil is used in the foams rather than petroleum oil during the manufacturing process which is likely to be more pleasant during the off-gassing process post-purchase, delivery, and setup.

All the foams qualify for the CertiPUR-US certification confirming that they’re also free of unwanted metals and harmful chemicals too.

The total carrying capacity with this Zinus Green Tea Mattress is 450 pounds between one or two people.

It takes two days for the memory foam to expand to its full volume. There is a minimal amount of off-gassing which passes shortly after its been allowed to expand fully.

The product comes with a 10-year warranty.

DynastyMattress Cool Breeze 12-Inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress

The DynastyMattress Cool Breeze 12-Inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress is a luxurious product complete with suede cover.

The product is available in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King, and RV Short King sizes.

The Cool Breeze is a four-layer, all-foam mattress that relies on cooling technologies to keep the heat retention down to an acceptable level. It offers a soft top layer with good relief from pressure when lying down on it and supportive layers beneath for a comfortable sleep overnight. The mattress starts off reasonably firm, but softens through use. Ideal for people with lower back pain issues. Back sleepers find this product comfortable; side sleepers and stomach sleepers initially feel it’s a little firm initially, but softens up nicely through use.

First off is the 3-inch HD Gel memory foam which uses sleep cool technologies to manage heat levels at the surface. The gel beads infused throughout this layer capture the heat and manage it perfectly.

The second and third layers are each 2-inch Air Cool Airflow separated from each other to help hot air circulate and escape.

The foundational layer is a 5-inch high-density HD base foam that reduces sound, shared movement, and supports the three layers above it.

All foam used has passed the CertiPUR-US testing and bears the mark to confirm its safe from dangerous chemicals and unsafe materials.

Currently, two gel pillows, which match the style of this mattress, come in the package free of charge.

The DynastyMattress Cool Breeze comes with a generous 120-day trial and a 30-year limited warranty.

Classic Brands 12 Inch Cool Gel Memory Foam Mattress

The Classic Brands 12 Inch Cool Gel Memory Foam Mattress is a temperature controlled foam bed for people concerned about heat retention.

The product is available in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King sizes.

The big thing about this mattress is the cool gel used in the top layer which draws heat from the body while sleeping. Gel particles are also partially used in the second layer too. The end of the bed even mentions this fact with an embroidered logo.

The mattress is a comfortable 12-inch profile that provides plenty of support. It has a 1-inch top layer of Cool Gel Memory Foam with gel infused into the aerated foam. The holes in the foam allow hot air to escape and the cooling gel particles manage temperature levels well. The memory foam lets the sleeper partially sink into the top layer where it hugs them comfortably.

There are a couple of Airflow Gel-Supportive layers, made from poly foam with gel particle infused, to keep heat down.

The final layer is a 5-inch HD base foam that is solid enough to provide a foundation for the rest of the mattress. Motion transfer is minimized or eliminated, along with sounds, due to the structure of this all foam mattress.

The product comes with a 25-year limited warranty.

Which is the best Amazon mattress?

The best Amazon mattress is simply the one that is a match for your requirements, sensibilities, and pocket book.

Things to consider

Materials

Energex foam

Energex foam from Elite Foam is used by several mattress manufacturers including Dreamfoam Bedding in their Arctic Dreams product which we review in this guide. The newer foam has a greater response to foam deforming pressure (or pressure release) than viscoelastic foam. Pressure relief is also superior to poly foam with an open structure that offers an alternative to pricey latex or a coil spring mattress. The Energex foam keeps cooler than many others and is useable across a wider range of room temperatures.

Memory foam

Memory foam and gel memory foam are two foam types that contour and mold to the shape of the body. Reformation response time is quick depending on the foam type. Gel memory foam has hundreds of gel beads that assist in keeping the sleeping material cooler. Standard memory foam tends to get warm and benefits from the use of thin 1 to 1.5-inch layers to avoid trapping heat.

Aerated foam, with regular holes through the layer, assist air flow and heat control. Quite often memory foam lacks sufficient bounce compared to memory foam, poly foam, and most coil spring types. For this reason, sometimes memory foam is used below a bouncier top layer on modern mattress products.

Latex foam

Talalay latex or Dunlop latex are the two most common latex materials used. Latex is either synthetic or natural, with the natural option being long-lasting but considerably more expensive. Talalay latex is easier to produce consistently and is often seen as a top layer because it has a more predictable manufacturing outcome and a softer feel.

A latex layer is sometimes included as a top layer of a multi-layered mattress to offer more bounce which a memory foam mattress usually lacks.

Poly foam

Polyurethane foam is an older type that is still regularly used today, particularly in cheaper mattresses and as a high-density foam base layer. The material continues to evolve with new improvements and refinements to its formulation to make it suitable for more products.

Coils + Foam

Spring mattresses either use dual spring racks of interconnected springs with foam layer separators between the racks or hundreds of separate coils wrapped in foam for improved motion isolation. In many ways, support is the best when compared to other types. For comfort, increasingly products are offered with plush Euro top or Pillow top covers with a soft filling or latex/memory foam top layers.

Sleeping Position

There are mattresses that are better suited to side, back and stomach sleepers. The reason for the differences is that pressures are placed on the body in different ways when sleeping on your back vs. on your side.

On your side, pressure is largely removed from the back and spine areas, but the head, shoulder and arm touching the mattress on one side experience greater pressure from lying on them all night. A plush top layer is helpful in this position.

On your stomach, pressure on the belly and pelvis is higher causing discomfort unless the mattress offers a plush top layer and a greater level of firmness than a side sleeper requires.

On your back, the spine must be correctly aligned to avoid waking with unnecessary aches and pains.

Firmness

With firmness, it runs on a rising scale from 1 to 10 (10 is the firmest). In many situations, a middle of the road 5 to 6 firmness level is suitable across different types of sleepers and sleep positions. A plush (very soft) mattress may suit some people, but likely one person from a couple will find it difficult to sleep on because of the lack of support. Equally, an extremely firm mattress is difficult to sleep on for most people because it has little “give” in it.

One selection modification to the above is the optional pillow top or euro top cover, or a top layer of Talalay latex or memory foam which is softer and smooths out a firm mattress. Alternatively, a mattress topper provides some temporary relief from an overly firm mattress. With an overly soft mattress, there isn’t much that is possible to rectify or workaround that issue. Therefore, going plush throughout the mattress needs careful consideration as it will often be a bad decision unless there is a medical reason for the purchase.

Budget

With Amazon mattresses, price is less of an issue that it was when mattress superstores were the only way to buy a new bed. Prices regularly get down into the three-figure range for quality brands and the latest foam technologies. Lower prices are also possible when avoiding California King, King or Queen size options which will stretch anyone’s budget.

Trial Period

Online mattresses often come with a trial period aka night trial. The startup mattress companies that sell exclusively online tend to almost always offer a free trial period where the buyer can return the mattress before the trial is over for a full refund.

Night trials range from 45 nights (Dreamfoam Bedding) to Tuft & Needle (100-night trial). Other manufacturers offer even longer trial periods in some cases. The trial is particularly useful for buyers who are nervous about buying a new mattress online which they couldn’t test out in person.

With foam products, they need to expand over a few days or one week. Occasionally, a new mattress is faulty and fails to expand fully in all areas. In this case, the mattress is returnable under the basic multi-night trial period without needing to get into the warranty period and coverage offered.

Warranty Period

The warranty period is different with each mattress and company. Some offer only a one year warranty whereas others are 10-years, 20-years, and even 25-years in one or two cases.

A mattress warranty covers sagging issues and indentation in the top layer (most commonly an issue with foam-based products). These warranties are limited in certain respects because natural wear happens with a product used for 8 hours every night, rather than being a cover-all insurance. With that said, they’re still good to have.

The product is available in Twin, Full, Short Queen, Queen, King, and California King sizes.

For anyone who wants to enjoy a truly plush top surface, then the Perfect Cloud UltraPlush model is certainly an interesting choice.

The top layer is a 1.5-inch proprietary air infused memory foam which caresses the body by hugging it and letting body warmth circulate to avoid hot spots. The under 2-inch layer is not thick enough to cause warm air to become trapped.

The second layer is a 2-inch Gel-Max memory foam that hugs the shape of the body that has already sunk through the top 1.5-inch layer. Gel particles throughout the Gel-Max memory foam suck heat away from the body when it’s at rest to avoid the common tossing and turning that comes from a restless night.

The Dreamfoam Bedding Arctic Dreams 10″ Cooling Gel Mattress is a modern mattress that uses a new kind of foam formulation with some attractive qualities.

The product is available in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Full XL, Queen, Short Queen, King, and California King sizes.

The firmness level of the Arctic Dreams bed is 6 for a medium level firmness. The first thing one notices is the plush surface which is a 0.75-inch effortlessly soft quilted layer that is so comfortable.

The next layer is a 3-inch Energex gel foam which is a type of visco-elastic foam. The foam is more responsive than regular memory foam, which lets the sleeper sink into it nicely, roll over in the bed and see the top layer reform fast. Energex is a good alternative to latex top layers will fewer production issues while making the foam material. It is also cooler and is usable in a wider range of temperatures from spring, summer, and autumn right through to winter. The pressure relief features are also excellent for people who especially need that feature.

Below the Energex foam is the 6.25-inch convoluted HD polyurethane foam base layer. The bottom layer provides a solid foundation for the product, reduces any motion transfer, muffles sounds, and provides good quality assurance.

Olee Sleep 13 Inch Box Top Hybrid Gel Infused Memory Foam Innerspring Mattress

The Olee Sleep 13 Inch Box Top Hybrid Gel Infused Memory Foam Innerspring Mattress is a lesser known brand that is going places with this hybrid model.

The product is available in Full, Queen, and King sizes only.

The Euro box top is the first thing one notices about this product. Its 2-inch poly Jacquard fabric has an attractive flowery pattern and it is filled with hollow conjugated fiber for padding with effective ventilation.

The 1-inch thin layer of Gel Cool Eco Friendly foam is light enough to not trap heat and offers further gentle support near the top. The 1.5-inch memory foam directly below is a softer mix that envelopes the body and provides pressure relief where it counts.

An additional 2-inch high-density foam does well to absorb any further weight and movement from the one or two people sleeping. It’s not as thick as a typical base layer because there is another layer to go.

All foam layers are CertiPUR-US certified to confirm they’re safe to have in the home.

The main support comes from the 7.5-inch steel, heat-treated, independently-encased coil spring level at the bottom. The addition of this level offers excellent bounce and body support while the upper layers keep sleepers very comfortable. Motion transfer is even lower than with all-foam mattresses due to the separated support system. The firmness level of this mattress is medium to firm.

The Euro box design isn’t seen as often as the pillow top design, but it works just as well. The inclusion of a fiber fill over a foam fill inside the Euro box cover is a nice touch that helps keep the cover smelling pleasant.

The gel infused foam also does well to keep temperatures on the lower side, which obviously, the spring system assists with as well.

The company offers a 10-year limited warranty on all mattresses.

The top layer is a 3-inch proprietary Gel-Plus memory foam which is reasonably dense for a medium firmness level and using gel particles handles heat buildup well.

The second layer is a 3-inch bi-directional Double Airflow Comfort foam layer. Every effort is made to ensure warm air circulates from this layer to keep the bed cooler.

The third layer is a deeper 4-inch HD base support foam that also has the Double Airflow feature. Effective temperature control at the base layer is less common than one would imagine, so it is good to see the additional investment made here.

All foams are CertiPUR-US certified confirming that they’re free of harmful chemicals, metals, and other things we do not wish to have in our homes.

The feeling of this mattress hits the magical Goldilocks level of being medium firmness that’s not too soft, nor to firm. It feels just right and likely will feel the same way for most buyers too.

GhostBed 11-Inch Latex and Gel Memory Foam Mattress

The GhostBed 11-Inch Latex and Gel Queen Memory Foam Mattress is a 3-layer bed that offers a nice mix of materials.

The product is available in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King sizes.

The GhostBed uses an all-natural continuous aerated latex as a premium 1.5-inch top layer that contours the body effortlessly and cushions it at the same time. The feeling of latex, is different to memory foam and it typically retains less heat too.

The 2-inch gel infused memory foam layer (4 lbs) comes next to add much desired pressure relief for anyone who wants to sleep well and not wake up with back pain the next morning. The gel particles extract heat from the body while the sleeper is dreaming ensuring they don’t wake up hot and sweaty halfway through the night.

The 7.5-inch high-density base foam layer is the foundation for the layers above. The medium firmness level is mostly derived from this HD base.

The softer removable cover uses quality fabrics, with the inclusion of polyester and viscose to give it stretch-ability. The self-wicking cover pulls moisture away from the mattress and is washable.

GhostBed is part of Nature’s Sleep, a long-established mattress manufacturer. The product comes with a 101-night trial period and a 20-year limited warranty.

Tuft & Needle Mattress

The Tuft & Needle Mattress is its own product with proprietary foam formulations adopted to provide something different to consumers.

The product is available in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King sizes.

The Tuft & Needle is a 10-inch foam mattress with a firmness level of 6. The top layer is 3-inch layer of poly foam with a 2.9 pounds per cubic foot (PCF) measurement. The foam is proprietary, designed to be bouncier than memory foam, and cooler than latex. The feeling is somewhat between that of latex and memory foam. Originally, their product was a little firmer, but their latest version has a medium firmness level which is ideal for many sleepers.

The second base layer is a 7-inch base support foam with a 1.8 PCF. The purpose of this layer is to support the full weight of the body or bodies lying on the mattress, minimize motion transfer, and provide the bed its foundational core.

One of the differences noticed right away with this product is the extra bounce than with competing memory foam mattresses. For nighttime activities, especially when tired from a full day, this likely will have some appeal. Pressure relief is also good with this product too.

The mattress comes with a 30-day trial period through Amazon and a 10-year limited warranty.

Leesa Mattress

The Leesa Mattress is a multi-layered foam mattress with unusual Avena foam for a different sleeping experience.

The product is available in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King sizes.

The Leesa is a three-layered foam mattress. The 2-inch top layer is a slab of Avena foam which is a durable proprietary formulation that offers great temperature management, added bounce, and improved comfort. The foam even has a wavy design on the underside which is excellent and assists air flow beyond its own naturally cooling properties.

The second layer is a 2-inch slab of memory foam which provides pressure relief, deep compression support, and body contouring capabilities.

The foundational layer is 6-inches of high density support foam. The foam is breathable, quite firm, and a solid base for the two layers above it.

Mattress covers are important too. In this case, a single piece of a poly-lycra blended woven fabric is used to create the 4-bar design. Lycra stretches naturally extremely well (it’s used all the time in sports clothing) and this cover is also thick and durable.

Motion transfer is not something one needs to worry about with the Leesa mattress either.

This American made product comes with a 30-night trial period through Amazon. The company also donates one Leesa Mattress to a homeless shelter (or other worthy cause) for every 10 sold. So, there’s a feel-good factor built-in with this product too.

The Eve Mattress

The Eve Mattress is a recent entrant into the market.

The product is available in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King sizes.

The designers of this final mattress are British. The company sells the mattress both in the UK and the USA markets. Their goal was to create an affordable, comfortable bed that wouldn’t break the bank.

The mattress is a 10-inch model that has three layers. The first layer is a 2-inch memory foam one that aims to float the body, making it feel more supported and comfortable to rest on the bed.

The second layer is a 1.5-inch polyurethane foam that has a lower density for greater breathability. Thus, this layer does well with both airflow and keeping heat levels at acceptable levels.

The final layer is a 6.5-inch support foam foundation layer which avoids transmitting motion transfer while supporting the two layers above.

The cover is a little different to other products reviewed in this guide. It is made from polyester with a stronger fabric evident around the side panels. The top of the cover is all white and the side panels are yellow. The visual effect certainly won’t be for everyone here. The cover is washer/dryer capable and is easy to remove.

The firmness level for this product is a 7, so it’s reasonably firm.

The Eve Mattress is available with a 30-day free trial period through Amazon and has a 10-year limited warranty. https://assoc-redirect.amazon.com/g/r/http://amzn.to/2EatDrc

FAQ

Q: Is it cheaper to buy a mattress from Amazon than in a showroom?

A: Each case is different, but bear in mind that retail locations require a significant markup to remain profitable and the salespeople usually work, at least in part, on a commission basis. These factors all serve to increase the cost of the product for sale in a showroom.

Q: Are there some brands and models that sell exclusively on Amazon?

A: It is true that some brands choose to sell exclusively through Amazon. Others may also sell via their websites and/or a retail channel.

Q: How is buying a mattress online any different than buying one in a store?

A: While you do not get to try the bed out personally, it is fair to say that even lying on a mattress for a few minutes with a salesperson hovering come by isn’t the most pleasant shopping experience. Without sleeping overnight on a mattress in a showroom and in the absence of reliable product information or reviews to go by, testing a mattress in a store is a little deceptive. It’s not possible to know how it’ll sleep overnight because you’re not there long enough to discover that.

Q: Do I need a different Amazon mattress depending on whether I’m a side, stomach or back sleeper?

A: Yes. Depending both on your sleeping position preference and the weight of you/your partner, only some products will offer a comfortable sleeping experience. We aim to point this out wherever possible. We also have separate guides for side sleepers and stomach sleepers with further information and product recommendation to help you.

Q: How will I know if the mattress will sleep hot?

A: That depends on several factors including the type of materials used for each layer, the overall design and construction, and the bedroom environment too.

Q: How are online mattresses packaged and shipped?

A: Online mattresses are usually compressed, rolled up, and shipped in a tall, slender box.

Q: Do mattress in a box online products need a special setup process?

A: All you need to do is open the box, slide the product out from the box, carefully cut open the packaging while avoiding puncturing the actual mattress, unroll it, and then leave it to fully expand. With innerspring or spring coil mattresses, the process is different to that described above.

Q: Is there any off-gassing with foam-based online Amazon mattresses?

A: It depends on the mattress, how many layers of foam were used, and how they’ve been produced. The off-gassing usually lasts a day to a week depending on the manufacturer and the type of foam(s) used.
