Construction of Each Mattress

The materials used and where they are placed in the mattress has a direct impact on the comfort and support that it provides. To give you a better understanding of the Ghostbed and the Casper mattresses, in this section of our review, we have provided a breakdown of the construction of each of these mattresses.

Construction of the Ghostbed Mattress

ghostbed-mattress-materials

The Ghostbed mattress is made from three layers of high-quality foam materials, including aerated latex foam, gel memory foam and high-density support foam. Each of the three layers combines to make a mattress that is a total of 11 inches thick. The construction of this mattress is as follows:

Top Layer

On the top of the Ghostbed is a 1.5-inch layer of aerated latex foam, which is designed to keep the mattress cool, and it also provides it with its softness and bounce. The top layer of the mattress also helps to relieve pressure points and is highly responsive, offering exceptional comfort.

Middle Layer

The middle layer of the Ghostbed is made of two inches of gel memory foam. This is the layer of the mattress that offers deep compression support and even more pressure relief. The gel memory foam is responsive but less so than the aerated latex foam, which is why this material is placed in the middle of the bed. Additionally, because it is infused with cooling gel, the memory foam helps to keep the mattress cool.

Bottom Layer

The bottom layer of the Ghostbed is made of 7.5 inches of high-density support foam. It is highly supportive, not only supporting the entire mattress, but also the sleeper.

Cover

Surrounding the three layers of the Ghostbed is a cover that is made of 100 percent polyester. It is soft, stretchy and plush. It fits snugly around the mattress and is very durable; however, it is also very breathable, which helps to keep the mattress cool. The side panels of the cover are made of a blend of polyester and polypropylene, which offers extra support and helps to protect the mattress.

Construction of Casper Mattress

Casper-Mattress-Materials

The Casper mattress is made of four different layers of foam, which combine to make a total thickness of 9.5-inch mattress. The construction of this mattress is as follows:

Top Layer

The top layer of the Casper mattress is made of 1.5 inches of synthetic Dunlop latex foam. This foam provides the mattress with just enough bounce to make it easy to move around in, and it is also very breathable, so it prevents the mattress from overheating and allows it to stay cool throughout the night.

Second Layer

The second layer of the Casper mattress is made of 1.5 inches of memory foam. This material conforms to the body, creating a hugging feeling and allowing the mattress to provide support where it is needed the most, aiding in pressure relief.

Third Layer

The third layer of the Casper mattress is made of 1.5 inches of poly foam. It eases the sleeper into the bottom layer and also provides additional support.

Bottom Layer

The final layer of the Casper mattress is another 5 inches of poly foam. This layer serves as the foundation of the mattress, supporting the four layers above it and thereby enhancing the support and comfort that the mattress provides.

Cover

The top portion of the cover of the Casper mattress is 100 percent polyester, the side panels are made of a blend of polyester and polypropylene, and the bottom of the cover is made of a blend of rayon, polyester, and aramid. The cover is soft and breathable, so it helps to prevent the mattress from overheating; however, it is a bit thin and may be prone to tearing.

Firmness and Support

Firmness and support are two of the most important factors of a mattress, as both factors have a direct impact on how comfortable the mattress is and how comfortable it will be. Here is a look at the comfort and support that each of these mattresses offer….

Ghostbed Mattress

On a firmness scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the firmest, we give the Ghostbed a score of 6.5. It is slightly firmer than neutral, so it should please the majority of sleepers; however, if you are looking for a soft mattress, this may not be the best pick for you. This mattress offers great deep compression support and pressure point relief, making it highly supportive.

Casper Mattress

On a firmness scale of 1 to 10, we also give the Casper mattress a score of 6.5. It is also designed to appeal to the firmness that the majority of sleepers desire; however, like the Ghostbed, if you are looking for a mattress that is soft, this may not be the best option for you. In regard to support, the Casper does a great job. It also does a great job of offering pressure point relief and deep compression support.

Sleep Position Ratings

We also wanted to examine the type of comfort and support that these mattresses provide in the most common sleep positions, including the back, the stomach, and the side. Here’s what we found…

Ghostbed Mattress

Back – The Ghostbed is slightly above medium in firmness, so it offers just the right comfort and support for back sleepers. It also properly aligns the spine, which provides pressure point relief and reduces pain that is often experienced in the back, the neck, and the shoulders while sleeping on the back.

Stomach – The Ghostbed contours nicely to the body, thanks to the memory foam, which is good for stomach sleepers. It alleviates the buildup of pressure on the lower back, which is a common issue for stomach sleepers. However, some stomach sleepers may find this mattress is a bit too firm.

Side – Because the Ghostbed is slightly firmer than neutral, it offers ideal support and comfort for side sleepers. The upper layer of the mattress does feel a bit firm at first; however, after just a few seconds, you can start to feel the memory foam in the center contouring to your body, thus offering proper alignment for the spine.

Casper Mattress

Back – Weight is evenly dispersed through this mattress, which reduces pressure buildup and provides great support for back sleepers.

Stomach – Most stomach sleepers will find this mattress comfortable. Again, it reduces pressure point build-up while sleeping on the stomach; however, some people may find it too firm while sleeping on the stomach.

Side – This mattress keeps the spine in proper alignment, so side sleepers should find it comfortable; however, the foam may sink too much for some side sleepers.

Which Mattress Should I Purchase?

So, which mattress should you buy; the Ghostbed or the Casper? In all honesty, these mattresses are very similar; they both have the same firmness level, they both offer great support, and the both sleep very cool. Additionally, both of these mattresses offer just the right amount of bounce, which makes it easy to move around in them when you are trying to change your sleeping position, when you are trying to get out of the bed, or when you are partaking in intimate activities. The Ghostbed is slightly more durable than the Casper mattress, which means that it may last a bit longer.
