Construction of Each Mattress

The materials used in a mattress and how it is constructed directly indicates how supportive and comfortable it will be. In other words, in order to gain a true understanding of what type of mattress you will be receiving, you need to have an understanding of its construction. For that reason, we have included a detailed look at how both the Casper and the Tempurpedic mattresses are constructed.

Construction of Casper Mattress

Casper-Mattress-Materials

The Casper mattress is a 9.5 inch mattress that offers four separate layers of different types of foam materials. The types of materials used and the layout of these materials is as follows:

Top Layer

The top layer of the Casper mattress is constructed of 1.5 inches of synthetic Dunlop latex foam. This foam gives the mattress its cooling power, as it does not retain a high level of heat and allows for heightened breathability, thus making it a cool surface to sleep on. Additionally, the Dunlop latex foam has a density of 3.3 pounds per cubic feet and gives is what provides the mattress with its ‘bounce.’

Second Layer

The second layer of the Casper mattress is made out of 1.5 inches of memory foam. This is the layer of the mattress that allows conforms to the unique the shape of the body, which improves support and aides in pressure relief, allowing you to wake up with less pain than you would on a traditional mattress. The memory foam layer of the Casper mattress has a density of 4.0 pounds per cubic feet.

Third Layer

The third layer of the Casper mattress is a layer of 1.5 inches of poly foam. This layer is intended to ease you into the base foam, thus providing increased support, while heightening the comfort level. The poly foam layer has a density of 2.5 pounds per cubic foot.

Base Layer

At the base of the Casper mattress is another 5 inches of poly foam. This layer serves as the foundation of the mattress, supporting the four layers above it and ultimately enhancing the support and comfort that the mattress provides. The bottom layer of poly foam offers a density of 1.8 pounds per cubic foot.

Cover

The cover of the Casper mattress is constructed of different materials. The top portion is made of 100 percent polyester; the side panels are made of a blend of polyester and polypropylene, and the bottom of the cover is made of a blend of rayon, polyester and aramid. The cover is very breathable and works in conjunction with the top layer of Dunlop foam, allowing for even more breathability and ensuring the mattress remains cool while sleeping. There is one downside that we noticed regarding the cover, however; it is not very durable, which makes it prone to tearing. On that note, make sure that you exercise caution when moving the mattress and while you are changing the sheets to avoid damaging the cover.

Construction of  Tempurpedic Mattress

Comprised of four separate layers of high quality foam materials, the Tempurpedic mattress is a total of 11.5 inches thick. The construction of the mattress, including the materials, is as follows:

Top Layer

On the top of the Tempurpedic mattress is a 2 inch layer of visco elastic memory foam. This material provides the mattress with the initial softness that is felt upon lying down. It is also contours to the body, creating a hugging feeling that provides support where it is needed the most; a trademark of the Tempurpedic brand.

Second Layer

Next, there is a 2 inch layer of visco elastic memory foam. This layer is much like the first layer, but it is just a bit firmer, adding to the support that the mattress provides. The visco elastic memory foam is very comfortable, and it works together with the remaining layers, creating even transitional support.

Third Layer

This layer is made of 4 inches of polyurethane foam and serves as a transitional support layer, as it helps to transition the feeling from the comfort layers on top to the foundation and support layer below. It helps to provide great pressure point relief and deep compression support.

Base Layer

Lastly, there is a 3.5 inch layer of polyurethane foam. This layer adds further deep compression support and serves as the foundation for the entire mattress. Not only does it support the sleeper, but it also supports the rest of the mattress and allows it to maintain its shape.

Cover

Encompassing all four layers of the Tempurpedic mattress is a cover that is made of a blend of polyester and spandex. The cover is thin and breathable, which helps to keep the mattress cool. It is soft, which makes it comfortable, and it is also stretchy, which allows it to bounce back to its original shape almost instantaneously.

Firmness and Support

Just like understanding the construction of a mattress is important, it is also important to understand the firmness and support that a mattress provides. Why? – Because they both indicate how comfortable it will be and the type of sleep that you can expect to experience.

Here’s a look at the firmness and support that both the Casper and the Tempurpedic mattress provide.

Casper Mattress

On a firmness scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest, we give the Casper mattress a score of 6.5. There is only one model offered, it is intended to offer ‘universal comfort.’ In other words, it is a one-size fits most mattress. While the majority of sleepers will find the firmness is just right, others may find it a bit too firm for their liking; particularly lighter sleepers.

In regard to support, the Casper mattress definitely delivers. It offers deep compression support and pressure point relief, and it also helps to keep the spine in proper alignment, which means that you will experience less pain when you wake up than you would if you had slept on a traditional mattress.

Tempurpedic Mattress

On the same firmness scale of 1 to 10, we give the Tempurpedic mattress a score of 5. It is truly a neutral mattress, meaning that it lies right in the middle of softness and firmness. Because of this neutral firmness feeling, it will appeal to the majority of sleepers. However, those who are heavier may find that it is too soft. Regarding support, we were pleased with the level of support that this mattress provided. The materials used and the construction of the mattress allow it to provide great deep compression support, and it also prevents the buildup of pressure in key points in the body that often develop pain while sleeping, such as the back, the neck and the shoulders.

Sleep Position Ratings

Not every person sleeps in the same position, and each position requires a different amount of support in order for a mattress to be truly comfortable. With that said, we also examine the type of support that these two mattresses offered in the most popular sleeping positions – the back, the stomach and the side – and here’s what we found.

Casper Mattress

Back – The Casper mattress is ideal for those who sleep on their backs. The foam layers offer great support, thus minimizing any pressure that may placed on the spine, neck and shoulders while sleeping. We found that it offers a suitable level of comfort for back sleepers of all weights and sizes.

Stomach – Like to side sleepers, small and average sized stomach sleepers will find the Casper mattress comfortable and supportive. However, people who are on the heavier side may find that the Casper mattress does not offer the support and comfort that they seek, as the foam may ‘give’ too much under the heightened pressure of more weight.

Side – In general, the average person who sleeps on his or her side will find the Casper mattress supportive and comfortable; however, there are people who may find it uncomfortable, particularly those who are on the heavier side. The foam tends to sink too much under higher weight, which can reduce the amount of support that it offers, thereby reducing its comfort and potentially resulting in pain.

Tempurpedic Mattress

Back – Body weight is evenly distributed throughout the Tempurpedic mattress, which makes it a comfortable option for back sleepers. Weight is evenly distributed throughout the mattress, which helps to eliminate the buildup of pressure in the lower back.

Stomach – Most stomach sleepers will find this mattress comfortable. Again, because weight is evenly distributed throughout the mattress, it helps to reduce pressure point buildup, particularly in the back.

SideSide sleepers should enjoy this mattress, as the neutral firmness and the hugging feel creates support where it is needed the most.

Additionally, both offer firmness levels that are suitable for most sleepers, and both are constructed out of high quality materials. With that being said, if you are looking for a mattress that is truly neutral in regard to firmness, than the Tempurpedic is the right choice for you; however, if you are looking for a mattress that is a bit firmer, than you should opt for the Casper mattress.
