Cocoon by Sealy Mattress Review

Cocoon by Sealy mattress review

Last Updated: March 2018

Sealy, one of the most trusted names in the mattress industry, has joined the ranks of the bed in a box industry with their newest innovation, the Cocoon mattress. The company, officially named Tempur Sealy International, Inc, is the most renowned mattress provider of bedding supplies in the world. In fact, Sealy has more than 130 years of experience in the bedding industry. To meet the every growing popularity of the bed in a box mattress models that have been infiltrating the industry in recent years, Sealy decided to rise to the occasion and create the Cocoon mattress.

As you would expect from the Sealy name, the Cocoon mattress is backed by scientific research, is expertly crafted, and is made out of the highest quality materials that are available. The Cocoon mattress is available in two models: Soft and firm. The soft model is comprised of three layers, which include memory foam, poly foam and base foam, which all combine to create a mattress that delivers exceptional support, superior comfort and minimal heat retention. The firm model offers two layers; one made of memory foam and the other made of support foam. The outcome of both of these thoughtfully designed mattresses is a sleeping surface that provides pressure point relief, offers deep compression support, and prevents overheating while you are sleeping while meeting your preferred firmness level.

While the Cocoon mattress from Sealy is designed to provide a fantastic night of sleep since it is a bed in the box model that ships directly from the manufacturer, you don’t have the ability to try it out before you buy it. While buying online eliminates the need to deal with high-pressure salespeople and reduces the overall cost of the mattress, it also means that it is difficult to determine if it meets your needs. To help you decide if it will, in fact, suit your needs, we have created this guide, which highlights all of the attributes of the Cocoon mattress.

  • Two firmness options
  • Two cover options
  • 100 night trial period
  • Slight off gassing
  • Minimal bounce, which means low intimacy level

The Competition

The Tweak mattress is a fair competitor for the Cocoon mattress by Sealy. The firmness level of each mattress is customizable, which means that you can choose the firmness level that best meets your needs. However, the Tweak mattress allows you to customize the firmness on both sides of the mattress, which enables you to create a sleeping surface that meets the needs of couples. The Cocoon mattress allows you to choose between two firmness levels; however, you cannot modify the support between two sleepers. In other words, the firmness is the same throughout the mattress.

The Helix mattress is also fairly comparable to the Cocoon mattress. Both are designed to provide the perfect amount of support and comfort for all body types and all sleepers; however, while the firmness of the Cocoon mattress is customizable, the rest of the mattress is not, whereas the Helix mattress is, as each of the layers can be customized to suit your specific needs. The Cocoon mattress, on the other hand, is available in two different firmness levels – soft and firm – which means that you have to select a firmness level that best suits your needs.

What’s It Made From…

Cocoon by Sealy mattress layers
As we stated above, the Cocoon mattress by Sealy is available in two different firmness options: Soft and firm. Both mattresses are a total of 10 inches thick; however, their construction does vary.

The Soft Cocoon Mattress

Cocoon by Sealy mattress-soft-firm
The soft version of the Cocoon mattress is constructed of three separate layers, which include memory foam, transitional poly foam and base foam.

The Top Layer

On the top of the Soft Cocoon mattress is a 2-inch layer of memory foam. This layer is intended to provide the mattress with the initial comfort that is felt when you lie on it. It is highly responsive and creates a hugging feeling that contours to your body, allowing for great pressure point relief while you sleep.

The Middle Layer

In the middle of the Soft Cocoon is a layer of 2 inches of transitional poly foam. This is the layer that provides the support for the mattress. It reacts to the weight that is applied to it, providing more support where it is needed and less where it is not. This helps to provide deep compression support. The middle layer also allows for a transition from the softer memory foam in the top layer to the firmer, denser layer of base foam on the bottom of the mattress.

The Bottom Layer

On the bottom of the Soft Cocoon is a 6-inch layer of dense base foam. This material serves as the foundation for the entire mattress, supporting the upper two layers and allowing the mattress to retain its shape. In addition, the dense base foam also provides deep compression support, further aiding in pain relief, which enhances the comfort.

The Firm Cocoon Mattress

Cocoon by Sealy mattress-soft-firm
The Firm version of the Cocoon mattress contains just two layers, which include memory foam and base foam.

The Top Layer

The first layer of the Soft Cocoon mattress is made of 2 inches of memory foam. Just like the Soft version of the Cocoon, this layer provides the initial comfort that you experience when you first lie on the mattress. It also provides pressure point relief. The memory foam layer in the Firm model is thinner, which allows for a firmer feeling than the Soft model offers.

The Bottom Layer

The base layer of the Firm Cocoon is made of 8 inches of dense base foam. This is the layer of the mattress that offers the sleeper deep compression support, as it responds to the body and provides the right level of support that is needed to prevent strain on the body, which thereby prevents pain. This layer also serves as the foundational base for the entire mattress.

In regard to the cover, there are also two options available, which can be applied to either model of the Cocoon mattress: The basic cover and the Cocoon Chill cover.

The basic cover is pretty straightforward. It is constructed of a blend of polyester and cotton. These materials create a cover that is soft to the touch, stretchy, durable and breathable.

The Cocoon Chill cover is also made of a blend of polyester and cotton; however, it also contains a phase change material, which allows the cover to actually feel cool when you touch it. Thanks to the addition of the phase change material, the Cocoon Chill cover both absorbs and stores body heat, which allows the feeling it offers to vary based on the temperature; it’s cool when temperatures are high and warm when they are low. Essentially, the phase change material serves as a temperature regulator, creating a sleeping surface that meets the needs of your body. Like the basic cover, the Cocoon Chill is durable, soft, breathable and stretchy.

Hands on Review

Cocoon by Sealy mattress reviewsThe Cocoon mattress by Seal is a bed in the box design, which means it is shipped directly from the manufacturer to the buyer. This does eliminate the hassle of shopping in a mattress store, and it also reduces overhead cost, which lowers the price of the mattress for the buyer. However, this also means that you can’t try the mattress out before you buy it, so it can be difficult to determine if it is the right fit for you.

If you are interested in the Cocoon mattress, we wanted to help you determine if it actually is the right option for you, which is why we included this Hands On Review in our guide. We have assessed key elements of both versions of the Cocoon mattress that impact its overall quality and feel, which directly impacts the type of sleep you can expect to experience on it. The elements we assessed include:

Firmness

As we have already mentioned, the Cocoon mattress by Sealy is available in two different firmness options: Soft and firm. On a firmness scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest, we give the soft version a score of 6 and the firm mattress and 8.

Comfort

The comfort level of the Cocoon mattress will be directly impacted by the model that you choose and depends entirely on the type of feeling that you are looking for. In our opinion, we found them to be moderately comfortable. The comfort layer – the top layer of memory foam – could be a bit thicker to make both the soft and the firm version of the mattress a bit more comfortable.

If motion transfer is something that impacts you and affects your comfort, we have to say that we think you will appreciate the Cocoon mattress. On both models, we did not experience any degree of motion transfer.

Pain Relief and Support

We did find that both models of the Cocoon mattress offer a great degree of support, which translates to no pain. Both versions mold to your body, which allows each one to provide you with the right amount of support right where you need it. This makes for great pressure relief and deep compression support.

Heat Retention

The cover you select will definitely have an impact on how cool the Cocoon mattress will remain. The basic cover is very breathable, which does help keep the mattress relatively cool; however, if you sleep hot retaining a cool sleeping surface is important to you, we suggest the Cocoon Chill cover. This cover is much more breathable and really does react to your body temperature, thereby allowing it to stay cool as you sleep.

Off Gassing

Off-gassing refers to the odor that a new mattress emits. It is often an issue with mattresses that are made out of foam, as there are certain chemicals that are used during the construction of the foam that it has an odor and that smell can seep out of the mattress. With both versions of the Cocoon mattress, we did experience a noticeable odor, and it was fairly significant. We placed both mattresses in separate rooms with the windows open, and it did take a few days for the odor to dissipate.

Intimacy

Since there was absolutely no motion transfer with either Cocoon mattress, there is a little bounce, which will certainly impact any intimate activities that you wish to partake in. Do expect to exert more energy when it comes to intimacy.

Sleep Position Ratings

We assessed the comfort and support that both versions of the Cocoon mattress offered for all sleep positions. Here’s what we found…

Back

Back sleepers who are heavier in weight or who are looking for a firmer mattress will enjoy the firm version of the Cocoon; however, we think that the soft version is a better option for the average back sleeper.

Back Sleeping score: 9/10

Stomach

We think that stomach sleepers will enjoy the softer version of the Cocoon mattress, as the hard version tends to feel a bit like a bored while lying on your stomach.

Stomach Sleeping score: 8.75/10

Side

Again, we feel like the firm model of this mattress is just too firm for side sleepers. We suggest going for the soft model if you are a side sleeper.

Side Sleeping score: 8.75/10

Warranty, Guarantee and Trial Period

  • Guarantee: Full refund
  • Trial Period: 100 nights

Conclusion

Cocoon by Sealy is available in two firmness options – soft and firm. Both models use high-quality materials and provide you with an option regarding the cover. It is a fair mattress, but we think that there are other bed in a box options available that are a better choice.
